PALATINE, Ill. – The Harper College men's soccer team continued their winning ways on Friday afternoon, defeating visiting Milwaukee Area Technical College (1-5) 2-1. The Hawks won their second straight game and beat the Stormers for the second time this season.
Milwaukee took an early advantage and still led 1-0 at halftime. Harper (4-5, 4-2 N4C) had an answer just moments into the second half, thanks to a spectacular goal by
Diego Caldera (Elk Grove, Ill., Elk Grove). The midfielder retreived a loose ball 15 yards away from the Stormer goal and lofted a ball to the upper left corner of the goal, just over the outstretched arms of the Milwaukee keeper.
"That was a beautiful goal," said head coach Jason Diebold. "It was nice to see us finish an actual goal. That's what I have been trying to get my guys to understand all along, that you don't have to kill the ball to score a goal. It's more about placement."
After the teams traded possession for a while, the Hawks struck again.
Stephan Thabuteau (Palatine, Ill., Palatine) dribbled down the right sideline and eventually crossed the ball into the box. Odin Rodeau appeared to have a good look at a header for a potential goal but a Stormer defender pushed him from behind, resulting in a penalty kick.
Kyle O'Meara (Palatine, Ill., Palatine) calmly converted the penalty kick, giving Harper a 2-1 lead and what eventually turned out to be the game-winner.
"It was a good step in the right direction," Diebold said. "That was a good game of soccer. It was a much needed confidence boost for our guys."
Harper returns to action next Wednesday as the team hosts Triton. The Hawks suffered a 2-1 setback to the Trojans on September 9th. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
