Palatine, Ill- In cold weather and slick field conditions due to hard rain, the Harper College women's soccer team managed to hold onto a 1-0 lead against Madison College after scoring in the 11
th minute. A well struck ball by
Julia Morales (/Schaumburg) slipped under Madison keeper, Aja Gurney, hands slowly rolling across the goal line. Despite the unfortunate break for Madison (8-7, 5-7 N4C), Harper controlled the match throughout and probably deserved the result.
Harper (8-4-1, 6-4-1 N4C) generated chance after chance, but was unable to come away with more than the 11
th minute tally. Madison keeper, Aja Gurney kept the Wolfpack in the game with a series of sprawling and diving stops. The Hawks rattled of 16 shots and won eight corner kicks, but could not run away with the match.
Despite only scoring the lone goal Harper coach Dwyane Cruz was pleased with the effort of his girls, but knows they need to get healthy for the playoffs. "We were trying to rest some players today," said Cruz. "We are prepared for the tournament, but we need to get healthy. If healthy, I think this team is capable of beating anyone."
The Hawks next match is on Oct. 14 against Triton College. Harper dropped its previous match 0-2 to the Trojans (6-7, 4-5 N4C) in September.
