Box Score PALATINE, IL- The Harper College men's soccer team faced off against the Illinois Valley Community College Eagles in the NJCAA Region IV Quarterfinals. The Hawks, a #3 seed, played host to the #9 Eagles and finished the match with a 2-0 victory.
The first 10 minutes saw the Hawks dominate on the offensive side with 3 shots, but IVCC's defense did not let any of them find the net. However, in the 13th minute,
Pedro Botello () took advantage of an IVCC goalie misplay and placed a nice chip shot over his head and snuck it in far post. Harper had a few more opportunities in the next 15 minutes after nice passing and corner kicks, but were not able to change the scoreboard. With just under 5 minutes remaining,
Cesar Velazquez () took a nice pass and amde a stong run while fighting off two defenders, but the drove him just far enough to make it a tough angle to shoot from and Velazquez left the shot just wide left. At the end of the first 45 minutes, the Hawks were up 1-0 in the win or go home Quarterfinal.
5 Minutes into the second half, Botello had his eyes on goal number two for the match after a nice run. He let a strong right foot kick fly towards the net but the Eagle keeper made a great diving save to keep the score 1-0. With 30 minutes to go in the match, the Hawks kept up the offensive pressure when Velazquez made a beautiful low cross into the box, but a sliding Botello could not get enough of it and ball went out of counds. With 13 minutes left, a shot by the Hawks was blocked in the box but the IVCC defender used his hand, resulting in a penalty kick.Â
Ivan Perez () took the shot and placed it past the diving keeper, giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead. After the goal, IVCC put on a little more pressure and had a nice look in the box, but Hawk keeper
Christian Hyde (/Conant) stood tall and deflected the shot out of harm's way. The match would go scoreless the rest of the way, but not due to lack of action.
With the 2-0 win, the Hawks advance to play the Madison College WolfPack in the Region IV Seminfinals on Wednesday in Madison. The two teams split the season series, with each team winning on the road by one goal.
