PALATINE, IL- The #10 ranked Harper College volleyball team played host to the #9 ranked Madison College WolfPack in the final N4C regular season match of the season. Harper got revenge from their September 20th loss with a three-set sweep of Madison.
Harper had gotten into the habit of falling behind early in matches, however they flipped the script in the first set. The Hawks took a quick 4-0 lead over the WolfPack. Madison would battle back to tie the score, but the Hawks would again build a four-point lead at 14-10 and 21-17 on the way to a 25-18 win. The second set began with an early 3-3 tie before the Hawks once again built a four-point lead at 11-7.Â
Ashley Rothenberg (Streamwood/Streamwood) stepped up to put the Hawks ahead 20-10 as they cruised to a 25-14 second set victory. Rothenberg's serving stayed hot in the third game as she guided Harper to a 7-1 lead. The six-point deficit was too much to overcome for Madison and Harper took the third set 25-16, ending the match.
The Hawks totaled 25 kills in the match and
Abby Wemple (Johnsburg/Johnsburg) (12 kills) accounted for nearly half of them. Wemple also led the team with 4 of the team's 12 aces while Rothenberg contributed 3 of her own. Harper had strong defense at the net as they finished with 10 blocks, led by
Gabby Fugle's (Island Lake/Wauconda)Â 2.5.Â
Karolina Sas (Palatine/Fremd) led the team with 11 digs and
Kathleen Gueco (Hanover Park/Hoffman Estates)Â added 12 assists.
The win clinched the Hawks a second place finish in the N4C at 9-3. Harper tied with Madison for the 2nd seed in Region IV and it will be up to the coaches to vote for seeding on Sunday. Harper edged out Madison in sets won (4-3) as well as overall points scored and opponents points allowed.
The Hawks will be in action again on Saturday as they travel to Illinois Valley to take on IVCC and Saint Ambrose.
