Harper Volleyball finished 9th of 16 teams at the NJCAA National Championship Tournament

NJCAA DIVISION III NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT
Harper College competed at the NJCAA Division III National Tournament held at Alliant Energy PowerHouse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  It was a great venue with the Hilton DoubleTree Hotel connected to the facility. 

In the first round, #8 seed Harper lost to
Delta from Michigan. Delta was ranked #3 in the NJCAA due to early season wins they had over #2 Owens and Harper at the Owens Invitational tournament back in early September. 

After Harper lost that initial match, Harper fell into the 9 through 16 bracket, and easily defeated #16 seed Dutchess in 3 straight sets (25-18, 25-7, 25-11); then Harper defeated #5 seed and NJCAA #5 ranked
Fulton-Montgomery in 3 straight sets (25-8, 25-16, 25-16); and then Harper defeated #7 seed and NJCAA #8 ranked Caldwell Tech in 3 straight sets (25-22, 25-18, 25-10).

Taylor Knuth was named to the All-National Tournament team. She led all tournament hitters with 71 kills.

Thursday, November 9, 1:00 p.m.

Cedar Rapids, IA: Delta College finished the season ranked #3 in the polls, and was seeded #9 of 16 teams in the tournament, just behind Harper College's seed at #8. 

Harper started out hot, then cold in this first match of the tournament.  Harper jumped out to a 3-1 lead, but then shanked an easy tip from Delta's outside hitter.  That was the first of 7 points in a row Harper lost to fall behind 3-8. Harper continued to struggle at 4-10, and 5-12, before almost catching up at 11-13. Finally, at 16-17, Harper earned an overpass, but followed through into the net, so instead of a 17-17 tie and momentum, Harper was still behind 16-18 and lost 21-25.

In the 2nd set there were many ties at 11-11, 12-12, 16-16, 17-17. Harper took a slim lead at 20-17 and 21-17 before winning 25-23.

In the 3rd set, The scores were even at 4-4, 5-5, 14-14, 15-15, 16-16, 18-18 and 22-22, but alas, Delta won the last 3 points to win 22-25 in this pivotal 3rd set.

In the 4th set, Harper jumped out to an 8-2 lead, and then 10-4. But Delta, determined to come back, leveled the score at 16-16 and 17-17. Then on 4 unforced Harper errors, Harper fell behind 17-21 and lost 21-25.

Harper was led by Taylor Knuth's 19 kills on 38 attacks.
Stacy Maimur added 8 kills, and Eden Suh and Maya Sokolowski each had 7 kills. Ava Belluomini and Regina Anelli each had 14 digs. Cana Jones led Harper with 28-28 serving and 6 aces. Belluomini was 18-18 serving with 2 aces.


#8 Harper College defeated #16 Dutchess
25-18, 25-7, 25-11

Thursday, November 10, Noon p.m.
Cedar Rapids, IA:  Harper started out slow in this match while
Dutchess started out hot. Harper called a timeout behind 3-6, and felt they needed to play more patiently. Harper pulled within 6-7; led 11-9, and was even at 15-15 before winning 25-8.

In the second set, Harper took an amazing 17-1 lead behind
Anelli and Jones' serving. Harper coasted to a 20-4 lead and a 25-7 win.

In the third set, Harper was tied at 5-5 and 6-6, before taking a 10-6 lead.  At 13-8,
Knuth had 11 kills for the match and eclipsed the Division III season kills record!  This was a BIG accomplishment for the year.  Harper finished the match at 21-11 and a 25-11 win.

Knuth led Harper with 14 kills on 31 attacks. Belluomini and Anelli each had identical stats – 6 kills and 3 errors on 19 attacks.
Jones led Harper with 13 digs. Jones went on another serving mission and was 26-26 serving with 3 aces. Anelli was 15-16 serving, also with 3 aces. 


#8 Harper College defeated #5 Fulton-Montgomery [ranked #5 in Final NJCAA poll]
25-8, 25-16, 25-16

Thursday, November 10, 4:30 p.m.
Cedar Rapids, IA:  Fulton-Montgomery finished the season ranked #5 in the polls, and was seeded #5 of 16 teams in the tournament.  Harper jumped out to a 7-3 lead, including winning a referee challenge;  then led 11-3 on the way to a 25-8 win.

In the second set, There were ties at 2-2, 5-5 and 6-6, before Harper sped ahead 12-8, and 15-9 on the way to a 25-16 win.

In the last set, Harper led 14-10 on an
Suh kill, led 20-10 and won 25-16 again.

Knuth had an astounding 23 kills on 35 attacks with just 6 errors, which is a .486 hitting efficiency.
Maimur was also 10 kills on 13 attacks and just 1 error for an astounding .692 hitting efficiency. Belluomini and Anelli each added 4 kills. Jones, Belluomini and Knuth each had 11 digs to lead Harper.

 
#8 Harper College defeated #7 Caldwell Technical Community College [ranked #8 in Final NJCAA poll] 
25-18, 25-22, 25-10

Caldwell Tech finished the season ranked #8 in the polls, and was seeded #7 of 16 teams in the tournament. 


In the first set, Harper led 5-2, 8-3, 16-7 and 20-10 on the way to a 25-18 win.

In the second set, after a 3-3 tie, Harper led the whole way at 8-3, 11-6, 21-17 for a 25-22 win.

In the last set, Harper could smell the finish line, after another 3-3 beginning, Harper led 10-4 behind Anelli's serves;  then 14-6 and 20-10, again before winning the last 5 points, 25-10.

Knuth led Harper with 17 kills on 34 attacks. Belluomini had 10 kills and 10 digs for a double-double.
Abby Major led Harper with 13 digs. Anelli had 10 digs. Starting libero Asia Williams played in the last set, and gave Harper a nice boost with her excellent passing and 3 digs.

 

Harper finished the year 27-18 overall;  finished 9th of 16 teams at the NJCAA National Championship tournament; won the Great Lakes District (v Owens), Region IV (v DuPage), and during the year defeated Nationally Ranked opponents #2
Owens Community College (3-0), #5 Fulton-Montgomery Community College (3-0), #8 Caldwell Technical College (3-0), and #11 College of DuPage twice (3-1, 3-1)… and Rochester Community and Technical College when they were ranked #14 (3-1), Joliet Junior College when they were ranked #15 (3-1), and Division I team Kaskaskia College (3-1).
