Jermaine Salcedo (Arlington Heights, IL/Rolling Meadows High School) and
Brandon West (Chicago, IL/Lake View High School) were both effectively wild, and wildly effective on Tuesday afternoon in Chicago.
The duo recorded 7 strikeouts and induced 11 weakly hit outs, but also combined the to walk 10 and hit 4 Olive-Harvey batters.
The story of the day was the ZERO hits they allowed, limiting the Olive Harvey damage to only four runs, which was just enough as Harper notched 6 of their own to earn the victory.
The game was scoreless through three innings, that was until
George Betevis (Hanover Park, IL/Bartlett High School) ignited the offense with a double down the leftfield line. After a
Kyle Odeshoo (Arlington Heights, Illinois/Prospect High School) lineout allowed Betevis to advance to third,
Michael Budorick (Glenview, IL/Glenbrook South) drew a two out walk. With runners at the corners and two outs, Budorick and Betevis executed a perfect double steal to get the Hawks on the board.
Matthew Schalk (Hoffman Estates, IL/Fremd High School) came through with a big hit three pitches later as he hit a hard ground ball back through the middle, allowing Budorick to score.
Things took a turn in the bottom of the fifth when Salcedo allowed five of the first six hitters to reach on four walks and a hit by pitch.
Brandon West (Chicago, IL/Lake View High School) then came into to relieve him and struck out two of the final four hitters that inning, but not before Olive Harvey scored four runs.
Harper answered with four of their own in the top of the sixth. The big hits were two out, RBI singles by
Ehinger Adrianza (Miami, FL/Felix Varela Senior High) and
Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, IL/Schaumburg High School).
West earned the victory on the mound for Harper College. The lefthander surrendered zero runs on zero hits over two and two-thirds innings, striking out two.
Jeremiah Hurt took the loss for Olive Harvey College 2023. Hurt went one and one-third innings, allowing zero runs on zero hits, striking out one and walking zero.
George Betevis (Hanover Park, IL/Bartlett High School) and
Ehinger Adrianza (Miami, FL/Felix Varela Senior High) each managed multiple hits for Harper College, and the Hawks didn't commit a single error.
Harper is back in action on Thursday at Wheeling's Heritage Park against Triton College. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
