It took 14 innings and nearly 130 batters, but the Hawks improved to 2-0 on the day and advanced into the winners bracket of the NJCAA Region 4 D3 tournament on Thursday.
Harper College nabbed the lead late in the game in an 8-6 victory over College of Dupage Chaparrals Varsity on Thursday. Â The game was tied at six with Harper College batting in the top of the fourteenth when
Tommy Jusi (Hoffman Estates, IL/Fremd High School) singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring
Nic Castrovillari (Hanover Park, IL/Bartlett High School)Â and put the Hawks in front.
After Harper College scored one run in the top of the seventh, College of Dupage Chaparrals Varsity answered with one of their own. Â Harper College scored when
Nic Castrovillari (Hanover Park, IL/Bartlett High School) singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run. Â College of Dupage Chaparrals Varsity then answered when A.J. Taylor hit a solo homer.
JT Adams (Huntley, IL/Huntley High School) delivered a gutsy performance in the biggest game of the season. The pitcher surrendered six runs on ten hits over eight innings, striking out two.
Jason Gutkowski (Roselle, IL/Lake Park High School), in his second outing of the day, was nearly flawless in his 6 innings of relief. The Augustana commit allowed only 5 hits and 1 walk while putting six consective zeroes on the scoreboard.
Harper College tallied 21 hits in the game. Â Gadomski,
George Betevis (Hanover Park, IL/Bartlett High School),
Kyle Odeshoo (Arlington Heights, Illinois/Prospect High School),
Sean Holbrook (Niles, IL/Niles West High School), Jusi, Castrovillari, and
Micah O'Neal (Forest Park, IL/Guerin Prep High School) each collected multiple hits for Harper College.  Gadomski and Betevis launched homeruns for the Hawks.
In a game that produced 36 hits, you would think the offense would be the story. For anyone that had the privilege of watching the game in person, they will tell you the defense for both teams was simply incredible. Neither team had an error, and there were countless web-gem caliber plays made around the diamond.
The Hawks will play #1 seeded Joliet Junior College at 3:00 PM on Friday.
