Hawks Women's Basketball Celebrate First NJCAA DII Win

Cicero, IL: The Hawks made history on Saturday, securing their first-ever victory as an NJCAA Division II program with a dominant 61-14 win over the Morton College Panthers. The victory also marked Head Coach Mari Neberieza's first win with the team, a moment that will surely be remembered for years to come.

From the opening whistle, the Hawks were locked in and ready to make a statement. They raced out to an early lead, finishing the first quarter with an impressive 24-3 advantage. That fast start set the tone for the entire game, as Harper went on to outscore Morton in each of the four quarters, showcasing their depth, balance, and relentless defense.

Gabriella Swanson was named Player of the Game after turning in an outstanding performance, recording her first career double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Her tenacity on both ends of the floor was a key factor in the Hawks' success as she helped control the paint.

Xzandria Turner led the scoring charge with 16 points, continuing to demonstrate her offensive versatility. She was a constant threat all night, keeping Morton's defense on its heels. Caroline Lucas also had a standout performance, knocking down four 3-pointers and finishing with 14 points, showing her sharp shooting touch and ability to stretch the floor.

The Hawks' rebounding efforts were truly a team effort, with several players contributing on the glass besides
Swanson. Kinsley Stillman grabbed 11 rebounds, while Anjanae Tyree pulled down 9, Turner added 8, and Emma Kruvalis chipped in 7. The team's collective effort on the boards limited Morton's second-chance opportunities and helped Harper maintain control throughout the game.

As a whole, the Hawks displayed a much more controlled and precise style of play compared to their first two games, and it was evident that the team is growing stronger with every outing.

With this victory, the Harper Hawks have not only secured their first win in the NJCAA DII era but have also shown the potential for a promising season ahead. Head Coach Mari Neberieza has instilled a sense of discipline and cohesion within the team, and it's clear the Hawks are beginning to click on both ends of the floor.

The Hawks' next challenge awaits, but for now, they can celebrate their first win that sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting season.

The Hawks play next on Tuesday at Moraine Valley at 5:15 PM.
