Volleyball Finishes Region 4 Playoffs

Madison, WI: The Final 4 teams of Region 4-A and Final 4 teams of Region 4-B were at Madison College, in Madison, Wisconsin this past weekend.

In the first Region 4-A Semi-Final match, Harper was on a mission against MATC, and won the match 25-21 25-18, 25-16. MATC had won the two previous meetings against Harper this year. Harper lost at MATC during a tri-meet they hosted, and they gave Harper its ONLY loss of the year at home. The Hawks had an amazing 15-1 season at home. This win put #4 Harper in the Region 4-A finals against #1 seeded host Madison. This time Madison was on a mission, and won 14-25, 22-25, 13-25. Madison, Region 4-A, and Sauk Valley who defeated Morton in the other Region 4 final will represent Region 4-B at the National Tournament in Cedar Rapids in two weeks.

Harper had a fantastic season, finishing seeded 4th of 23 Division II teams in Region 4, but lost in the Region Finals match against nationally ranked Madison. Harper finished the season with a record of 33 wins and 14 losses. This is the 10th time in 23 seasons that Harper finished with a greater than 30 wins in a season.


Phoebe Kim, Jocelyn Erling, and Lauren Ahlstedt were named All-Region. Kim was also nominated for NJCAA DII All-American. She is currently FIRST in the nation with 1,619 assists (9.58 assists/set). This is also a 2-year Harper College career record. Erling is currently FIFTH in the nation with 528 total kills (3.24 kills/set), at least before the start of the National Tournament.

Harper defeated MATC 25-21, 25-18, 25-16
In the first set, Harper fell behind 0-3, and 2-5, but caught up finally at 13-13 and 14-14 on a
Erling kill. Harper took a slim lead 17-15 on an overpass that Jada Hoyt smashed home. Harper led 20-15, and won 25-21.

In the second set, Harper jumped ahead 3-0, and led 7-2 when yet another
Brianna Van Dyke ace landed after skimming the net… Harper pushed to 11-3, and 14-8 on a Erling kill. Harper led 17-11, and 19-13 on a VERY long and exciting rally. Hoyt aced MATC for a 20-14 lead, and Harper won 25-18.

In the third set, Harper led 5-0, 10-4, 14-6 and then on a loud smash from
Ahlstedt to lead 16-9. Erling had a nice line kill at 20-15. Ahlstedt earned the 24-16 point on a kill off the block which happened a bunch in this match, and Harper won 25-15 on a Erling ace in the back corner. 

For the match,
Erling led Harper with 10 kills and a block, Ahlstedt had 9 kills and a block. Destiny Parsons had 9 kills and 2 blocks. Raegan Frappier was 19-20 serving with 2 aces. Kim was 14-15 serving with 2 aces. Erling was 13-13 with 4 aces, and Van Dyke was 12-12 with 5 aces.
 
Harper lost to Madison 14-25, 22-25, 13-25
Harper fell behind right away in the first set, down 5-11. Harper made a gallant effort pulling to 11-14 on 3
Mira Tchohadjieva heavy kills, but Harper fell 11-17 and a 14-25 loss. After this first set, Madison had an astounding 14 kills and 1 hitting error.

In the second set, Harper playing far better, led 7-4, but was tied at 8-8 and 9-9. Harper jumped ahead 14-9 and 17-12, but in one rotation, Madison tied the score 17-17, and went on to win 22-25. Harper lost both the lead and the momentum. 

In the 3rd set, Madison could feel the finish line and had significant leads of 6-14, 8-18 on the way to a 13-25 loss for Harper. Harper didn't 'lose' this match, Madison was on a mission. Madison had 42 kills and 9 errors to Harper's 27 kills and 9 errors.  Madison also had 13 aces to Harper's 4 aces. For the match,
Tchohadjieva had 10 kills, and just 1 error. Selin Hurdogan had 14 digs, and Kim was 13-13 serving and 12 digs. Frappier was 11-12 serving with 4 aces.

Madison played very well all season, was undefeated in the region, and is a very deserving representative for Region 4 at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament.
