Men's Cross Country

Hawks Claim 2025 National Championship in the Snow

Fort Dodge, IA: Battling snow, cold, and fierce competition, the Hawks men's cross country team rose to the challenge on Saturday morning, capturing the 2025 NJCAA DIII National Championship at the Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Hosted by Iowa Central, the meet featured true winter racing conditions in mid-30s temperatures and snow, but that didn't stop the Hawks from executing a smart, tactical race that earned them their 10th national title since Head Coach Jim Macnider took over in 2011.

The Hawks entered the meet as the nation's top-ranked team, narrowly ahead of defending champions and Region 4 rivals College of DuPage. True to their ranking, Harper delivered a complete team performance, placing all five scorers in the top 25.

Freshmen standouts Sebastian Welc and Ryan Golden led the way, finishing fourth and fifth to earn First-Team All-American honors. Welc put himself in the lead pack early and battled through the tough final kilometers as the top three runners pulled away. Golden stayed within striking distance throughout the race but couldn't quite close the gap, securing a top-five finish in his first national cross country meet.

Ethan Waddell earned Honorable Mention All-American and Jerome Graessle earned USTFCCCA Coaches Association All-American honors along with three Hawks ahead of him. They placed 14th and 16th respectively. Waddell ran a gritty race, regaining his position in the final two kilometers after slipping slightly mid-race. Graessle, a returning All-American from last season, once again showed his experience, moving up from 29th to 13th by 5k before settling just outside the top 15.

Michael Johnson rounded out the Hawks' scoring five with a major breakthrough performance. After starting as far back as 51st, Johnson surged throughout the race, climbing to 21st overall, sealing the national title for Harper.

The Hawks' depth continued to shine with RJ Moniri and Nate Larsen finishing 41st and 49th, both running strong supporting races that showcased Harper's complete team effort.

With four All-Americans and all seven runners finishing in the top 50, Harper's depth was clear from start to finish. Their last title was in 2023 as the team finished as runners-up in 2024 as the team continued their excellence under Macnider.
