Hawks Rally Late but Fall Short in Home Loss to Illinois Valley

Palatine, IL: The Hawks women's basketball team gave a determined effort Tuesday night at Hawks' Fieldhouse but ultimately fell 60-55 to Illinois Valley Community College in a tightly contested matchup. After trailing by as many as 14 points in the fourth quarter, the Hawks mounted a spirited comeback, cutting the deficit to just two points with under three minutes to play, but could not complete the rally.

Illinois Valley led 15-10 after the first quarter and extended the margin to 31-21 by halftime. Harper chipped away in the third, outscoring the Eagles 15-14, but still found itself down entering the fourth. The Hawks turned up the defensive intensity and pushed the pace late, making it a one-possession game before Illinois Valley held on for the five-point win.

Ariana Buss led Harper with 15 points, going 6-of-14 from the field and adding 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Marque Taylor scored 12 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and brought energy at both ends of the court. Kinsley Stillman was strong on the glass with 10 rebounds and contributed 9 points, while Zariela Myles chipped in 8 points and 4 boards. Xzandria Turner added 7 points and 5 rebounds, and Gabriella Swanson battled inside for 3 points and 7 rebounds.

Harper shot 32.7 percent (18-of-55) from the field and 20.7 percent (6-of-29) from three, while converting 13 of 20 free throws (65 percent). Illinois Valley's shooting efficiency and ability to extend its lead early gave it the cushion it needed to withstand Harper's late surge.
