Coach Jack Ary resurrected the Harper cross country program in 2000 after the program dissolved in 1989. In his seven seasons as the head coach, he led the men's program to four top-10 national finishes and the women's program to three. The Hawks also were the Region 4 champions for men five times and the women once.

Before Harper, Coach Ary coached the boys at Conant High School for over 30 years. His team's finished top five in the state three times - 3rd in 1983, 4th in 1984, and 3rd again in 1985.

He coached against Harper coach
Jim Macnider (Schaumburg) in the MSL for 25 years. Both coaches are in the top-10 all-time for dual meet wins in Illinois.
