Coach Paul Paynter joined the Harper coaching staff in the fall of 2008. He coached the men's and women's cross country programs for three seasons until 2010.

For the women, the Hawks finished sixth at the NJCAA DIII National Championship in 2009 and finished fifth in 2010 under Paynter. They also won the Region 4 title in both 2009 and 2010, the fourth and fifth in program history. Irene Valladares finished third at the 2008 national meet and as the 2008 Region 4 champion. Chelsea McPherson was the 2009 Region 4 champion.

On the men's side, the Hawks finished seventh at the NJCAA DIII National Champion in 2008 and 2010. They won the Region 4 title in 2008 and 2010, marking their 6th and 7th in school history. In 2009 they were the Region 4 runners-up. In 2009, Jesus Escareno was the Region 4 Champion and Runner of the Year. He went on to finish second at the national meet. In 2010 Chris Hoffman defended Escareno's individual title to win for the Hawks as well.
