WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. –
Chloe Takala (Hoffman Estates, Ill., Fremd) and
Leah Tednes (Hoffman Estates, Ill., Hoffman Estates) scored four goals each as the Harper College women's soccer team defeated host Century College 9-1 on Saturday night. A fofeit canceled the Hawks' match with Milwaukee Area Technical College on Friday, meaning the team hadn't played in ten days. The team showed no rust despite the layoff, dominating from the outset.
"Chloe and Leah stepped up and playing a man down," said head coach
Dwayne Cruz. "We played really well. Our hope is to continue to play at a high level and keep getting fit."
Harper wasted little time getting on the board as
Nicole Gaborek (Arlington Heights, Ill., Hersey) set up Takala for her first goal in the third minute. Tednes got in on the action just three minutes later, taking a feed from Takala and beating Century's keeper to make it 2-0. Gaborek scored a goal of her own in the 15th minute and Takala added her second in the 31st minute to make it 4-0 Hawks at halftime.
The second half was much of the same as Tednes and Takala scored unassisted to open the half, Harper's seventh goal was courtesy of a
Elizabeth Tapia (Hanover Park, Ill., Schaumburg) assist as Tednes scored again.
Bree Nishibun (Palatine, Ill., Fremd) assisted on Takala's fourth and final goal while Gaborek closed out the Hawks's scoring after setting up Tednes.
The Hawks did all this despite playing a player down because of a red-card suspension.
