WARRENVILLE, Ill. – The Harper College women's cross country team took top team honors at the Region IV Championship on Saturday at the St. James Farm Forest Preserve. The women scored 20 points to top Joliet Junior College (38 points) for the Region IV crown at the NJCAA Div. III level. While the meet was not scored to include all teams regardless of division, the Hawks placed first among all NJCAA schools at the meet with 53 points to edge Moraine Valley Community College (56 points).
Freshman Silvia Catalan (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) was Harper's top runner for the second straight meet, completing the 5K course in 20:40.1 to take eighth place overall out of 66 runners.
A trio of Harper runners – Stephanie Chaires (Palatine, Ill./Christian Liberty), Lori Delfin (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling), and Marisa Andreuccetti (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Conant) – took 14th, 15th, and 16th place, respectively. Chaires finished in 21:05.3, Delfin in 21:06.3, and Andreuccetti in 21:11.5. Itzel Sotelo (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) rounded out the top-five for the Hawks with a 19th place finish in 21:23.5.
Maria Barajas (/Schaumburg) also ran a strong race for Harper, placing 26th in a time of 22:13.5. Cynthia Siddiqui (/Palatine) also ran well and took 34th place in a time of 22:44.5.
The Hawks, who are ranked No. 1 in the nation in the NJCAA poll, will compete at the 2014 NJCAA DIII Women's Cross Country Championship on Nov. 8 in Canadaigua, N.Y.
