CANADAIGUA, N.Y. – The Harper College women's cross country team finished second in the nation at the 2014 DIII Women's Cross Country National Championship on Saturday at the Bruce Bridgeman Cross Country Course, the highest team finish in school history. The Hawks scored 89 points in the meet to finish behind only Mohawk Valley Community College, who scored 63 points to capture its 11th national title.
Two Harper runners earned All-American status at the national meet hosted by Finger Lakes Community College. Sophomore Marisa Andreuccetti (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Conant) was Harper's first runner to cross the finish line, doing so in 21:27.1 on the 5K course for an 11th place finish and All-American distinction. Freshman Silvia Catalan (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) was Harper's second All-American with a 14th place finish in a time of 21:33.3.
Stephanie Chaires (Palatine, Ill./Christian Liberty) captured 16th place with a time of 21:36.2, and Lori Delfin (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) was Harper's next runner to finish with an 18th place finish in 21:52.5. Itzel Sotelo (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) rounded out the scoring for the Hawks with a 31st place finish in a time of 22:44.3.
Harper's Maria Barajas (/Schaumburg) and Cynthia Siddiqui (/Palatine) also ran strong races. Barajas took 46th place with a time of 23:19.1, and Siddiqui came in 73rd place in 25:10.6.
"They moved up well and finished strong," said Harper head coach Jim Macnider. "This was a great way to end an excellent season and come home with the first trophy for women's cross country."
