BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Harper College women's cross country team ran in the Illinois Intercollegiate Championship Cross Country Meet hosted by Olivet Nazarene University on Friday. The Hawks placed eighth overall and were the top junior college at the meet.
Harper's top five runners combined to score 275 points, well ahead of the nearest junior college team (Illinois Central College 391 points). The meet featured several strong four-year programs, led by University of Chicago, who won the meet with 28 points. University of St. Francis finished runner-u with 62 points, followed by host Olivet Nazarene University in third place with 103 points.
Standout freshman Ali Gutt (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) once again led the way for the Hawks. Gutt finished the 5K course in 19:22.5, good for 17th place overall. Leslie Rosiles (Mount Prospect, Ill./Rolling Meadows) finished next for Harper, taking 64th place overall in a time of 20:34.4.
Dianne Barajas (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Schaumburg) ran the course in 21:05.9 for 91st place, and teammate Silvia Catalan (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) took 92nd place in 21:07.1. Katie Thevara (Des Plaines, Ill./Elk Grove) clocked the fifth-best time for the Hawks, completing the course in 22:22.5 for a 128th place finish.
Veronica Brooks (Arlington Heights, Ill./Battle (Mo.)) ran a 22:26.5 for 132nd place, and Michelle Puma (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) placed 163rd in 24:08.8. Other Harper runners included Amy Nava (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) (166th, 24:28.6) Maggie Madden (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) (175th, 25:47.3), Nancy Leinwander (Inverness, Ill./Fremd) (176th, 25:54) and Jacqueline Colon (Des Plaines, Ill./Elk Grove) (185th, 28:02.5).
The Hawks will be back at the St. James Farm Forest Preserve in Warrenville for the Benedictine Invite on Friday, Oct. 9 at 4 PM.
