Box Score PALATINE, Ill. – In yesterday's Harper College men's soccer home opener against College of Lake County, 90 minutes of soccer and two overtime frames couldn't decide a victor as the two teams ended in a 0-0 draw.
The Hawks (0-1-1), failed to capitalize on some prime chances in the first half. Harper outshot Lake County (0-0-1) 10-6 in the half, but goalkeeper Luis Perez was up to the task with six saves. Hawks forward Niko Mihalopoulos (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Huntley) applied pressure to the Lancer defense and put four shots on goal in the first half. Harper netminder Jacob Goldstein (Buffalo Grove, Ill. /Stevenson ) was rarely tested in the first half as he made just two saves.
In the second half, Goldstein was tested more and made four saves. Harper continued to apply pressure in the second period and appeared to have its best scoring chance in the 78th after Luis Vargas (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) was tripped inside the box, setting up a penalty kick.
Juan Hernandez (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) took the penalty kick for the Hawks, but he was denied on a diving safe by Perez when he tried to put the ball in the right side of the net. Just minutes later, Harper appeared to score the game's first goal as Colin O'Meara (Palatine, Ill/Palatine) found Fabian Tovar (Palatine, Ill/Palatine) on a cross, and Tovar put the ball in a wide open net. However, the goal was waved off due to an offside penalty.
After regulation, the two teams played two 10-minute overtimes periods where one goal would decide a winner. The Hawks' best chances came off the feet of Mihalopoulos and Alex Ramirez (Carpentersville, Ill./Dundee-Crown) while the Lancers managed seven shots, three on goal, in the overtime frames, including a shot off the post.
For the game, Harper put 11 shots on goal compared to nine for Lake County.
The Hawks return to the pitch on Wednesday, September 2 at 4 PM with their N4C opener against visiting Madison College (0-1-1).
