Box Score PALATINE, IL-Â The Harper College men's soccer team hosted the Madison College WolfPack on Friday, but fell 1-0 in regulation.
In the first half, both offenses made a point to apply pressure early. Just 8 minutes in,
Pedro Botello () made a nice move to get around the Madison defender and create an open shot but Botello's shot was easily corralled by the Madison goalkeeper. In the 15th minute, goalkeeper
Christian Hyde (/Conant) aggressively cut off the ball at the top of the box to prevent the WolfPack from seeing a clean scoring chance. Each team would trade scoring opportunities for the remainder of the half, but both defenses stood tough to keep the game tied at 0 as the first whistle blew.
The second half saw both teams have shots on goal in the first 10 minutes, but neither could find the back of the net. The match would see its first goal of the day in the 61st minute when the WolfPack's Toby Andrews sneaked a shot past Hyde from the top of the box. Neither team saw much offense past that point and the defenses started to get more aggressive, seeing multiple hard fouls and tough slide tackles. Harper would get their chance to score with 5 minutes to go when a nice cross set up a header in the box that hit the post and rebounded back to Harper for another chance that the Madison goalkeeper was able to save. The intensity and emotion picked up for the rest of the half as both teams received yellow cards, but the match would end in a 1-0 loss for the Hawks.
Harper moves to 6-5-1 overall and 3-4-1 in the N4C. The Hawks will have a chance to draw even in conference play on Wednesday when MATC comes to Palatine for a 4pm start.
