Hawks Go 3-1 at Waubonsee Invite

PALATINE, IL-  The #2 ranked Harper College volleyball team participated in the Waubonsee Invite in Sugar Grove this weekend.  After the two day tournament, the Hawks came home with a 3-1 record.

Game One- Harper defeats DII Henry Ford College (15-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-21)

The Hawks fell behind early in their first set of the year and were not able to bounce back before dropping set one 15-25.  Set two saw 6 ties before Harper was able to gain some breathing room and go ahead 21-17.  Lydia Schiller's (Hoffman Estates/Classical Consortium Academy) team leading 3 kills and 2 blocks led the Hawks to a 25-20 set two win.  Momentum from the second set helped the team get off to an 8-3 lead before Henry Ford came back and tied the set at 11, 12, 16, and 17 before Harper once again gained late breathing room for another 25-20 win.  Freshman Kayla Agoranos led the charge with 7 kills and Kathleen Gueco did it all with 9 assists and 7 digs.  Yet again, set four had more late drama as the set was tied 20-20 before Harper finisehd the match with a 25-21 win.  Gabby Fugle (Island Lake/Wauconda) and Schiller led the clinching set with 3 kills each and Gueco added another 12 assists.
Fugle led the team with 11 kills while Agoranos and Schiller finished with 10 apiece.  The Hawks served at an 86% clip for the match and totaled 9 aces.  Agoranos had 4 while Ashley Rothenberg (Streamwood/Streamwood) had 2 of her own.  Fugle and Schiller combined for 6 blocks on the defensive end and Karolina Sas (Palatine/Fremd) led the way with 24 digs.  Two Hawks finished with double-doubles (Agoranos- 10 kills, 14 digs, Gueco- 11 digs, 33 assists)

Game Two- DII #20 Muskegon defeats Harper (22-25, 16-25, 20-25)
Harper dropped to a 6-8 deficit before battling back for a 9-8 lead.  The set was tied at 9, 10, 11, 13, and 15 before a Harper missed serve put them behind for good, falling in set one 22-25.  Fugle and Mackenzie Bush (Bartlett/Bartlett) each had 5 kills and Karolina Sas (Palatine/Fremd) had 11 digs.  Set two was tough from the start as the Hawks were down 9-15.  After a timeout, the team came back within 4 but eventually fell 20-25.  The third set had an early tie before Muskegon was once again able to pull away, ending the match with another 20-25 score.
Muskegon played tough at the net as the Hawks were only able to tally 25 kills, led by Bush's 7.  Harper finished with 4 aces, one each from Sas, Agoranos, Jessica Smith (West Chicago/West Chicago), and Kyla Daczewitz (Bartlett/Bartlett).  Sas led the team with 27 digs while Smith had 17.  Gueco notched another double-double, finishing with 13 digs and 18 assists.

Game Three- Harper defeats DII Oakton (25-20, 25-12, 18-25, 25-15)
The Hawks jumped ahead early in the match with leads of 7-0 and 10-1.  Oakton made a little comeback, bringing the score to 19-13 before Harper finished off the 25-20 opening set win.  Gueco paced the team, going 10-11 on serves with an ace.  Set two started close with ties at 2-2 and 4-4 before Harper took off to a 13-6 lead on the way to a 25-12 win.  Bush led the way with 3 kills and Agoranos was 7-7 serving with 3 aces.  The third set was not how the Hawks drew it up, falling behind 5-10 before dropping the set by a score of 18-25.  Harper had 11 service errors through three sets.  Set four was more to the team's liking as the Hawks built up a 15-6 lead before the 25-15 win ended the match.  Ashley Rothenberg (Streamwood/Streamwood) had 4 kills and an ace while Smith and Fugle each had 2 aces.
Rothenberg paced the Hawks with 7 of the team's 29 kills and Smith, Agoranos, and Rothenberg had 9 of the 13 aces.  Fugle and Lydia Schiller (Hoffman Estates/Classical Consortium Academy) played tough at the net, each tallying 3 blocks while Rothenberg had 14 digs.  For the third straight match, Gueco finished with a double-double (10 digs, 22 assists).

Game Four- Harper defeats DII Macomb (25-15, 25-22, 25-11)
Harper once again had a quick start to the match, going ahead 9-1 before coasting to a 25-15 victory.  Fugle was efficient with 5 kills on 7 attacks while Smith was perfect at the service line, going 9 for 9.  The Hawks were ahead 9-7 in set two before Macomb battle back and took a 10-12 lead.  However, Harper was able to bounce back and finish off a 25-22 victory.  Fugle stayed aggressive with another 6 kills while Gueco helped out with 12 assists and 6 digs.  Set three lacked the excitement of the previous set as the Hawks stormed to a 25-11 match-clinching win.
