Harper Volleyball defeated Prairie State

Harper College defeated Prairie State 25-15, 28-26, 25-19
Thursday, Sept 14, 6:00 p.m. at Prairie State College, Chicago Heights, IL: After an hour drive turned into over 90 minutes on the road due to construction season, Harper arrived in Chicago Heights, home of the Prairie State Pioneers. This is Harper Volleyball's first ever match at Prairie State College.

Harper took a 5-0 lead in the first set behind Cana Jones' serving.  But Prairie State quickly tied the set at 6-6 and 7-7. Then behind 5 straight serves from Taylor Knuth, Harper took a 12-10 lead. After a Stacy Maimur (Wheeling/Stevenson H.S.) smash that would surely have made the highlight film had the video recorder been working, Harper took an 18-11 lead on the way to a 25-15 win. Knuth had 4 kills. Jones was 7-7 serving with an ace, and Knuth was 6-6 serving with 3 aces.

The second set turned out to be a very close set… There were ties at 13-13, 14-14, 16-16, and 19-19. Prairie State took a commanding 20-23 lead, but after 2 more Maimur smash highlight reel plays, Harper tied the score at 23-23. At 24-24, both teams traded missed serves. The score remained tied at 25-25 and 26-26, before Harper captured the 28-26 win. Maimur had 4 kills and 1.5 blocks. Eden Suh was 5-5 serving with an ace.

In the last set, the teams were level (soccer term since the soccer team played today as well) at 1-1, 4-4, 8-8, 12-12, and 14-14. At 16-18, Jasmine Nitu clobbered 2 consecutive howitzer shots (ie. aces) to tie the score at 18's. Then Harper took a slim 19-18 lead and won 25-19. Ava Belluomini and Knuth each had 4 kills, and Abby Major in her setting debut, logged 10 assists. Nitu was 8-9 serving with 4 aces in this set. 

Harper had 14 digs in each of the 3 sets for 42 total digs. Asia Williams led Harper with 13 digs. As usual, Knuth led Harper in kills, this time with 11 kills. Nitu ended the match with 6 aces, Knuth added 4 aces for the match, and Suh finished the match with 3 aces.

 

Next match will be Tuesday, 6:00 p.m. at North Park University, coached by Mike Sopocy who was Belluomini's club coach years back.

On Thursday, Harper travels to College of DuPage to play the first of a Home-n-Home series; in a BIG Region 4 battle. While Harper Volleyball is off this weekend, College of DuPage is traveling in Dallas this weekend to play the good teams from the South.
