Harper College Tri-Match 9/23/2023
DIII #15 Harper College defeated DII South Suburban 16-25, 25-18, 20-25, 25-14, 15-13
Saturday, Sept 23, 10:00 a.m. at Harper College!

Palatine, IL:  South Suburban came in for a rematch at Harper College. Harper defeated South Suburban 3-straight in Chicago Heights just two weeks ago back on September 12th. Today was a different story. Harper Volleyball did indeed win, but BARELY in a hard-fought set 5, 15-13, 2-point win! This too was an instant classic volleyball match.

In the first set, clearly South Suburban came to play. There were ties at 1-1, 8-8, 9-9  and 10-10. South Suburban took a 14-18 lead and a 16-20 lead, and never looked back to defeat Harper 16-25, to win the first set.
Maya Sokolowski led Harper with just 2 kills. Asia Williams was on-fire with her serving, she was 7-7 with FOUR aces!

In the second set, Harper started strong with a 4-0 lead, but South Suburban played tough and tied the score at 6-6, 7-7, 8-8, 9-9, 11-11, 13-13 and 14-14. At that point, Harper took a commanding 19-14 lead on the way do a 25-17 win. Now, the sets are tied 1-1. This match has now become a best of 3.
Stacy Maimur led Harper with 3 kills. Jasmine Nitu was 5-6 serving with an ace.

Another tight set ensued, with ties at 3-3, 6-6,7-7, 16-16, 18-18 and 19-19. At that point, Harper lost its grip, and South Suburban took a 20-23 lead and defeated Harper 20-25. South Suburban now had a 1-2 set lead. It looked grim for Harper Volleyball.
Taylor Knuth began to heat up with 3 kills to lead Harper. Eden Suh was 5-6 serving with an ace.

Beginning the 4th set, Harper went back to the drawing board, and changed its lineup, and took an early 7-1 lead, and then a 10-6 lead, despite 3 service errors. Harper maintained the lead at 13-8, 15-9, 18-10  and won 25-14. Now, the match was tied at 2 sets apiece.
Sokolowski found her groove and led Harper with 5 kills. Regina Anelli, back in the match was 8-8 serving and Knuth was 6-7 serving with 2 aces.

Time for the final deciding set… Harper jumped ahead 3-0, and 7-1, but an undaunted South Suburban team tied the score at 9-9. The video showed that Harper missed a serve, over-passed the ball, failed to dig a roll shot, flopped on a tipped ball, hit one out, and then set the referee stand; South Suburban tied the score again at 11-11, and then took a relatively commanding 11-13 lead. At that point on a pass over the net,
Ava Belluomini confidently screamed "MINE" so loud that legend says could be heard back in the Roman Times, and somehow Harper eeked out a narrow 15-13 win in that next rotation. Knuth led Harper with 3 kills. Anelli had 2 kills including the match-winner, and Medieval Assassin Belluomini had 2 kills. Abby Major, Cana Jones and Kaylee Obrzut each had an ace in this final set. Obrzut had her best set with 7 digs, for 14 digs total for the 5-set match.
