Harper Volleyball Lost Yet Another 5-set Match

DIII #15 Harper College lost to Bryant & Stratton 25-21, 23-25, 26-28, 25-17, 9-15
Tuesday, September 27, at Harper College.
Palatine, IL: Bryant and Stratton, from Wauwatosa, Wisconsin came into town, and competed in a very entertaining 5-set match, where Harper College let yet another 5-set loss happen. Harper Volleyball is now 1 win and 7 losses in 5-set matches.

The first set was a close battle all the way to the end. There were many tie scores in this match at 3-3, 10-10, 11-11, 14-14, 20-20, and 21-21 when Harper focused to win the last 4 points to win the first set.

The second set was close in the same way… Harper took a 5-1 lead behind Jasmine Nitu's serves, but Bryant and Stratton tied the score right away at 5-5. There was another tie at 7-7, but Harper took a commanding 13-8 lead behind Taylor Knuth's serves. Harper extended the lead to 15-9, but Bryant and Stratton stormed back quickly to tie the score at 15-15, 16-16, and 17-17, before taking charge with a 17-21 lead and a 18-23 lead. Harper attempted late comeback, but fell short 23-25.

The third set was a very frustrating one for Harper in terms of execution… Harper started out at 2-2, but fell behind 5-10; Harper continued to close the gap, s-l-o-w-l-y at 11-15, 12-16, 13-17, and then 16-17; but at 17-18 Harper missed a serve. At 18-19, Harper missed another serve. The score was tied at 22-22, 24-24, on game point, with Harper leading 25-24, Harper misplayed a free ball resulting in another 25-25 tie. 

After the last tie score at 26-26, Harper hitters thought hitting the ball out-of-bounds twice in a row was a good idea for a 26-28 loss.

After the usual 4th set lineup change, all was right with the world… Harper led 5-1, 13-7, 22-17 on the way to a 25-17 win.

This match came down to the 5th set; for Harper the 8th fifth set of the year… It started out close at 1-1, 2-2-and 3-3, but Bryant and Stratton took a 3-7 lead, and turned it into a 7-10 lead, then an 8-13 lead and a 9-15 loss for Harper College.


Next match for Harper College is a home match on Thursday, 9/28, at 6:00 p.m. against Joliet!  Last time these 2 teams played was at the College of DuPage Invitational during the second weekend of the season where Joliet won in, you guessed it, 5 sets.
