Volleyball Drops Both at Kankakee Tri

Kankakee, IL: Harper traveled to Kankakee on Friday to play both DII #23 Sauk Valley and host DII Kankakee at the Kankakee Tri-Match.

Harper lost to DII #23 Sauk Valley: 11-25, 18-25, 16-25
2:00 p.m. at Kankakee

Harper Volleyball started out very slow against Sauk Valley who had just defeated Kankakee in 3 sets. Harper fell behind 1-5, but then tied the score at 5-5. Harper continued to struggle falling behind 8-16 and 9-19 before losing 11-25. Maya Sokolowski (Mount Prospect/Prospect H.S.) led Harper with 3 kills.

In the second set, Harper was tied at 5-5 again, before falling behind 10-15, 25-20 before losing 18-25.  Libero Abby Major (Hanover Park/Hoffman Estates H.S.) had 6 digs in this set.

In the last set, Harper fell behind the usual 5-10, then 10-15 again;  this time 12-18 before losing 16-25.  Abbie Greenberg (/Schaumburg High School) had 3 "loud" kills in a row in this 3rd set.  Morgan Krieter (/Lake Zurich High School) added 3 kills of her own on 5 attacks.  Libero Abby Major (Hanover Park/Hoffman Estates H.S.) added another 6 digs.

Harper lost to Kankakee: 14-25, 21-25, 20-25
7:00 p.m. at Kankakee

Harper inexplicably fell behind right away 1-10. Unfortunately, for Harper, the gap wasn't going to get closed in this set… 5-15, 7-17, 8-19 before losing 14-25 in the opening set.

In the second set, there were a bunch of ties at 2-2, 3-3, 6-6, 8-8, 9-9, 10-10 and 14-14.  Harper fell behind a bit, but knotted the score again at 21-21, before losing the last 4 points in a row, for a 21-25 loss.

The third set started out 2-2, but Harper fell behind 10-12 and 14-17 before tying the score at 20-20.  Similarly, Harper lost the last 5 points in a row to lose the third set 20-25.

Harper Volleyball, after losing to #20 Lansing last weekend, and now #23 Sauk Valley, Harper's hopes of being in the DII top 20 this year is… remote. In two weeks at the Heartland tournament, Harper Volleyball will also play #5 Parkland and #10 Heartland. This year's schedule is not for the meek.

Another side note – College of DuPage (COD) will host the 2025 and 2026 DIII national championship. This tournament was at Rochester Community and Technical College for over 20 years, before moving to Cedar Rapids last year and this year, and will be at COD at least the next two years after that. Congrats DuPage on earning the bid!

On Tuesday, Harper Volleyball travels to Moraine Valley to play quite possibly the best team in this competitive Region IV. Coach Bob Vilsoet says, "Perennial DII strong teams Moraine Valley, Sauk Valley, and Former DIII Nemesis' Rock Valley and Madison will likely be seeded 1 through 4 in Region IV in some order to start the Regional Tournament."
