Volleyball Rallies Back After Starting Match 0-2

Wauwatosa, WI: In a stunning comeback, Harper College defeated Bryant & Stratton in a thrilling five-set match at Mount Mary College in Wauwatosa, WI. Trailing 0-2 in sets and facing a 10-20 deficit in the third set, the Hawks fought back to secure a 26-28, 21-25, 27-25, 25-23, 15-12 victory.

Set Breakdown:
Set 1: A tight battle saw both teams exchanging points late in the set. Harper held a 25-24 lead but missed a crucial serve, eventually dropping the set 26-28 after a serve receive error.
Evie Mounts, Maya Sokolowski and Mira Tchohadjieva each had 3 kills in this set. Jasmine Nitu was 6-6 serving with 2 aces. Mounts was 7-8 serving.
Set 2: Missed serves plagued the Hawks, leading to a 21-25 loss despite staying close in the early stages.
Sokolowski had 5 kills on 6 attacks in this set. 
Set 3: The turning point came with Harper trailing 10-20. A remarkable rally, including key serves from
Morgan Krieter, helped them win 27-25, keeping their hopes alive. Krieter had 5 kills and a block. Abbie Greenberg also provided a serving spark with 5-6 serving and 2 aces.
Set 4: Harper took control early with a 15-10 lead but had to fend off a late Bryant & Stratton surge to win 25-23, forcing a deciding fifth set.
Greenberg led Harper with 3 kills in this set. Krieter was 6-6 serving with 2 aces.
Set 5: The Hawks dominated early, holding an 8-5 lead at the side switch. Though Bryant & Stratton closed in at 12-10, Harper pulled away for a 15-12 victory.
Greenberg added 4 more kills, while Taylor Coutts had 2 aces late in the set to help win the match.

Key Players & Stats:

Sokolowski was the offensive star, leading with 13 kills on 24 attempts (46% hitting efficiency).

Krieter delivered a double-double performance, with 12 kills, 10 digs, and 3 aces.

Phoebe Kim orchestrated the offense with an impressive 52 assists, adding 13 digs for a double-double. Kim was also 17-18 serving, 94% with an ace.

Abby Major anchored the defense, recording a match-high 32 digs, which puts Major in the coveted 30-dig club;  while also serving 14 of 15, 93% with 1 ace.

Lauren Ahlstedt, plus Greenberg, Tchohadjieva and Mounts were key offensive contributors with 11, 8, 7 and 6 kills, respectively.

Major (32 digs) and Kim (13 digs).

"This was the 'furthest' comeback victory I can recall in my 20 years," said Coach Bob Vilsoet. Harper Volleyball outscored Bryant and Stratton by one point, 114 to 113 in this long 5-set match. Bryant and Stratton will get a chance for a rematch at Harper on Thursday, September 26. 

Next up – Harper hosts a Tri-match tomorrow, September 21, with Kishwaukee (0-7) at 10:00 a.m., and then South Suburban (7-8) at 2:00 p.m.
