Hawks Sweep South Suburban in Straight Sets

Rockford, IL: The Hawks volleyball team continued its strong play Thursday night with a commanding three-set sweep over South Suburban College in Rockford, winning 25-12, 25-19, 25-14. The Hawks controlled the match from start to finish, using balanced offense and steady serving to extend their winning ways and build momentum heading into another weekend of competition.

Harper took a quick lead in the first set at 6-2, and extended the lead to 10-4 on a Mira Tchohadjieva smash. Harper led 17-7 when Tchohadjieva finally libero'd out… Harper finished with a 25-12 win. Tchohadjieva started out 5-5 with 5 kills and 4 digs. Jocelyn Erling was 7-7 serving including an ace, plus had 3 kills and a block. Lauren Ahlstedt added 3 kills on 5 attacks. Selin Hurdogan had 5 digs and was 8-9 serving with an ace.  

Set two was closer with ties at 1-1, 3-3 and 6-6. Harper edged ahead 12-10 and 15-10. South Suburban pulled to 17-15, but Harper pushed forward 20-16 and a 25-19 win. Ahlstedt had 4 kills on 6 swings, and Destiny Parsons added 4 kills. Hurdogan and Phoebe Kim each had 4 digs. Plus Hurdogan was 6-6 serving with 2 aces.

In the last set, Harper was behind 2-5 when Parsons clobbered one. Harper leveled the score at 7-7 on two Ceylin Ertekin serves;  then 8-8. Harper took a 17-14 lead on a Ziya Cooks kill, and went on to win 25-14 after 8 consecutive service bombs from Ahlstedt. Parsons continued her hot hand with 5 kills and a block. Hurdogan added 6 more digs. Ahlstedt finished 9-10 serving with 4 aces. Ali Pierre was 4-4 serving with an ace. 

Cooks had more fans at this game than all the rest of the players on both teams, combined.


Next matches are Saturday in Benton Harper, MI, versus Lake Michigan College and Southwest Michigan College. Harper previously defeated Lake Michigan 3-0 at Harper, and lost to Southwest Michigan 1-3 at the Opening Weekend Tournament in Rockford, IL. Matches start at noon EASTERN time.

Next home match will be Tuesday, October 14, 6:00 p.m. versus North Park.
