Hawks Split in Michigan: Sweep Lake Michigan, Fall in Five to Southwest

Benton Harbor, MI: Harper Volleyball made the trip to Benton Harbor, Michigan, for the Lake Michigan Tri on Saturday, facing teams from across the region. The Hawks opened the day with an impressive sweep over host Lake Michigan College, showcasing strong serving and balanced offense throughout. In their second match, Harper jumped out to a two-set lead against Southwest Michigan College, but the Cougars rallied late to complete a reverse sweep in a five-set thriller.

In the first match, Harper defeated Lake Michigan 25-17, 25-9, 25-16.  In the second match, an instant classic popped out; Harper won the first two sets, but couldn't close the deal and lost the next 3 sets in a classic "reverse sweep" for Southwestern Michigan…  25-21, 25-23, 17-25, 16-25, 9-15.

Lake Michigan 25-17, 25-9, 25-16
In the first set, Harper was playing very well and took leads of 4-1, 8-2 and 13-6. Harper extended to 17-11 on the way to a 25-17 win.
Jocelyn Erling had 6 kills, and Lauren Ahlstedt had 3 kills. Selin Hurdogan was all over the place with 12 digs and 6-6 serving.

In the second set, Harper took leads of 7-5, then 14-7, 19-9 leading to a 25-9 win.
Mira Tchohadjieva had 5 kills on just 6 attacks. Ali Pierre added 2 blocks. Raegan Frappier was 6-6 serving with 3 aces.

In the last set, Harper led 3-1, 9-5 and 16-13, before extending the lead to 22-14 and a 25-16 win.
Pierre had 5 kills on 8 attacks, and Tchohadjieva added 4 kills on 7 attacks and a block. Frappier was 7-7 serving while Hurdogan was 8-9 serving with an ace and 4 digs.

Southwest Michigan 25-21, 25-23, 17-25, 16-25, 9-15
In the first set, things went well for Harper with leads of 3-1, 8-3 and 10-6, but 6-straight lost points put Harper behind 10-12. Harper tied the score again at 16-16 and took a 20-17 lead before winning 25-21 on an
Pierre exclamation point smash. Ahlstedt had 5 kills, Erling had 5 kills. Tchohadjieva had 3 kills and 2 blocks. Hurdogan had 7 digs.

In the second set, Harper fell behind early, 5-10 and 9-15 and 12-16 but began to mount a comeback (I think I can, I think I can)… 14-18, then 17-19… and finally tied at 19-19, and 21-21 (first to win 4 points now)… Harper took the lead 22-21 on a
Ahlstedt smash, 23-21 on an Pierre smash, and then an apparent 25-22 win. But alas, that sideways touch in the corner went unnoticed… Harper won this set again 25-23 on a Destiny Parsons block. Erling had 6 more kills. Ahlstedt had 4 kills. Hurdogan had 8 digs. Phoebe Kim was 7-7 serving with an ace.

In the third set, Harper led 7-3 and 8-6;  Then there was a long delay after a questionable over the net block and a libero out of rotation, play resumed with ties at 9-9, 10-10, and 11-11. Harper fell behind 12-16. Harper tried closing the gap, but a very spirited Southwestern Michigan team kept the momentum… 13-17, 15-19, 16-20 and Harper lost 17-25.

In the 4th set, Harper fell behind 5-11, and 11-21 on the way to a 17-25 loss.
Pierre had 4 kills and a block to pace Harper. Kim was 6-6 serving.

In the final deciding set, there were ties at 1-1 on a
Tchohadjieva kill, and 3-3 on another Tchohadjieva kill.  Harper was behind 4-8 at the switch… then 5-8 on a Ahlstedt kill, but continued to lose ground at 6-11 and 7-13 when two consecutive Erling slams were too little too late and Harper lost the set 9-15 and the 5-set match 2-3. Ahlstedt was a bright spot with 3 kills on 4 attacks. Frappier was 4-4 serving.

Harper is now 25-10 overall, and 9-1 in Region 4. The Hawks will play next on Tuesday at home against North Park.
