Hawks Win Five-Set Thriller to Avenge Early-Season Loss to North Park

Palatine, IL: Harper Volleyball delivered one of its most thrilling performances of the season Tuesday night, outlasting North Park University JV in a five-set battle on their home court. The Hawks showed resilience and heart, overcoming early struggles to rally for a 3-2 victory and avenge their earlier loss to the Vikings. Behind strong serving runs, clutch defense, and a balanced attack, Harper turned the match into an instant classic earning their 26th win of the year in dramatic fashion.

In the first set Harper started out 0-2, and fell further behind 2-7 due to a bunch of self-inflicted errors. Jocelyn Erling had a nice kill to make the score 4-9, and Lauren Ahlstedt's kill brought the score to 7-11… Harper remained behind 10-16, 14-21 on the way to an 18-25 loss. Erling had 4 kills. Ahlstedt, Ali Pierre and Mira Tchohadjieva each had 3 kills. Selin Hurdogan had 7 digs, and Phoebe Kim had 6 digs.

A better start in the second set had Harper ahead 2-0 this time, then 7-1, 12-2, 13-6, and 14-10 on the way to a 25-13 win. Ziya Cooks got cookin' and had 3 kills and 5 rejections at the net. Tchohadjieva had 3 blocks and a kill as well. Kim was 9-9 serving.

Now it's a best of 3 match.

In the important and pivotal 3rd set, Harper fell behind 0-4, and 2-8 ("Lovely")… then 4-11 and 5-14 (But… "I think I can, I think I can…" was alive and well)  Harper pulled to 15-17, and 18-21… then there was a 20-24 deficit.  Harper somehow pushed to a 26-24 win behind setter Kim's 6-straight serves.  This was a BIG turn of events! Ahlstedt added 4 more kills and a block… Cooks also had 4 kills and a block. Tchohadjieva also joined the 4 kills and a block party. Only 2 hitting errors between the 3 of them. In THIS set, Kim was 10-10 serving with 2 aces. Running everywhere, Raegan Frappier had 8 digs. Hurdogan added 6 digs.

Now, Harper is ahead 2-1, instead of 1-2.

In the 4th set, Harper predictably fell behind 0-2, but tied the score a bunch of times… 4-4, 5-5, 6-6, 7-7, 8-8… Harper pulled ahead 11-8, but then more ties at 13-13, 14-14, 15-15, 16-16 and 18-18… This time North Park pulled ahead 18-21 ("ARG!").  Harper tied the score at 21-21, and 23-23, before losing its grip 23-25. In this close 4th set, Harper struggled with kills, but did have 4 block-kills. Hurdogan had 6 digs, and Harper only missed one serve in this close 2-point loss.

So…, Tied 2-2, here we go – set 3:
Harper started out 2-0 ("Yay!").  Then 5-1 and 8-2 at the switch.  Harper extended the lead to 10-3… Cooks hit a highlight film bomb to make the score 13-5; Hurdogan made an amazing diving dig followed by a well-placed Ahlstedt kill for the 14th point. Erling sealed the set and match win with a block. Tchohadjieva had 3 kills… Erling had 2 kills and a block. Erling and Hurdogan each had an ace to pace the set.

Harper avenged the 1-3 loss to North Park University earlier this year is now 26 wins and just 10 losses. 


Next match is at Bryant and Stratton College, which will be played at the OAW Indoor Sports Complex on 5330 South Racine Ave in New Berlin, WI 53146.
