Hawks Advance to Region 4 Semi-Finals

Palatine, IL: The Hawks hosted Moraine Valley for first round of the DII Region 4 Playoffs (Quarter-Finals) and defeated them to advance to the Semi-Finals. The top 2 winners go to Nationals and represent DII, Region 4-A, and Region 4-B. Harper is in the A bracket.

In the first set, Harper started out slow and fell behind 1-5 and 2-8. Harper caught up quickly 8-8 behind Raegan Frappier's serves and defense, plus a solid kill from Jocelyn Erling finally leveled the score. More ties ensued at 9-9, and then 13-13 on an Ali Pierre smash. The score was tied again at 15-15 and 17-17.  A "lift" call put Harper behind 19-20, but Harper tied the score at 20-20, and took a 21-20 lead behind a Frappier ace. Harper won this opening set 25-21. Erling had 8 kills. Frappier was 9-9 serving with an ace. Ana Kadolph led Harper with 7 digs.

In the second set, Harper took a 4-1 which included 2 kills from Destiny Parsons. Harper extended the lead to 8-2 and 14-7 and 20-10. Harper finished this set with a 25-13 win. Lauren Ahlstedt and Erling each had 4 kills. Phoebe Kim was 7-7 serving with an ace.

In the final set, the scores were tied early at 1-1, 2-2, 3-3 and 6-6.  Harper took a 12-8 lead, and extended to 19-12 before winning 25-17. Erling led Harper again with 4 kills, and had 2 blocks. Mira Tchohadjieva had 3 kills and 2 blocks. Selin Hurdogan was 5-6 serving with 2 aces.

Kim finished the match with a statistical double-double;  a very healthy 38 assists and 13 digs; and was also 14-14 serving with an ace.


Harper will play Milwaukee Area Technical College on Saturday at Madison, Wisconsin, at 1:00 p.m. If Harper College wins that match, Harper will play on Sunday, at Noon for the District A championship and the right to represent Region 4-A at the National Tournament in two weeks in Cedar Rapids.
