Hawks Battled in Emotional Road Game

Chicago Heights, IL: The Hawks women's basketball team competed with energy and grit Saturday afternoon in a 56-45 loss at Prairie State College, a matchup that carried added meaning as head coach Mari Neberieza faced her former program. Harper kept the game close in stretches, but Prairie State's second-quarter surge proved decisive in a competitive Region 4 matchup.

Harper led early, scoring 10 points in the first quarter while holding Prairie State to 7, but the Pioneers responded in the second with a 19-6 run to take control at halftime, 26-16. Both teams scored 12 points in the third, and although Harper outpaced Prairie State 17-18 in the fourth, the Hawks could not fully close the gap.

Offensively,
Marque Taylor led Harper with a standout performance of 19 points on perfect shooting from the field (6-of-6) and 3-of-3 from three, along with 5 rebounds and notable efficiency. Ariana Buss added 12 points, including two three-pointers, and chipped in 3 steals. Zariela Myles contributed 6 points and 7 rebounds in extended minutes. Hailey Franczkowski scored 4 points, and Kinsley Stillman added 3 points with 10 rebounds. Gabriella Swanson battled inside, finishing with 12 rebounds, while Xzandria Turner (Lincoln, IL/Mt. Pulaski High School) provided effort and defensive energy in limited touches.

Harper shot 25.4 percent from the field and 19.2 percent from three, showing defensive intensity and rebounding tenacity but facing challenges converting efficiently. Prairie State's balanced attack and second-quarter momentum ultimately proved the difference in the final margin.

Although the loss adds to the early season struggles, Harper's effort and competitive spirit against a familiar opponent reflect progress and resilience as the Hawks continue their Region 4 campaign. Harper will look to carry that competitive energy into its next contest.
