Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Hawks Fly High in Season Debut

Rockford, IL: Harper Volleyball traveled to the Opening Weekend Tournament (OWT) at the UW Health Factory in Rockford, IL.  This is the largest 2-year college tournament in the country.
Harper won four matches, and lost just two matches, against very tough opponents.

On Friday August 22, Harper defeated John Wood 27-25, 25-18, 25-20, and Kellogg 25-14, 23-25, 25-16 and 25-22.

On Saturday, Harper lost a very close match in 5 sets to Lincoln Land 25-21, 18-25, 25-9, 22-25 and 12-15. Harper regrouped and defeated Rend Lake 25-20, 25-19 and 25-8.

On Sunday, the first time Harper Volleyball ever competed on a Sunday, Harper lost to Div I Kaskaskia 19-25, 23-25 and 16-25. Finally, in an "instant classic", Harper defeated a very strong Kalamazoo Valley team 22-25, 25-22, 26-24 and 25-21, in a very very exciting well-played match by both teams.

Doing well for Harper Volleyball after the Opening Weekend Tournament:
  • Both libero Selin Hurdogan and defensive specialist Brianna Van Dyke are performing fabulously at serve receive (47% and 48% efficiency respectively - top-notch), which is making competing with these top teams even possible in the first place.
  • Jocelyn Erling is leading Harper with 72 kills on 186 attempts with just 17 hitting errors for a superstar hitting percentage of 29.6%. Keeping pace is Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Ahlstedt with 45 kills on 113 attack attempts from both the left- and right-sides for a hitting percentage of 29.2%. Also keeping pace is Sophomore middle hitter Mira Tchohadjieva with 44 kills on 92 attack attempts for a hitting percentage of 30.4%.  These stats are really high-level against excellent teams.
  • Serving has been a struggle; as a team, Harper Volleyball is serving just 85%. We'll blame that on the cramped surroundings at the UW Sports Factory, and first weekend jitters.
  • MSL All-Area libero Hurdogan is leading Harper Volleyball with 122 digs, 5.55 digs/set.
  • Phoebe Kim amassed 192 assists already for an 8.73 assists/set clip.  Last year, Kim finished in 7th place in terms of total assists for setters in Division II, which has about 180 teams competing nationwide.  Note that 24 of those teams compete in our rugged Great Lakes Region 4.
Coach Bob Vilsoet says, "I'm very impressed with how well we played this weekend.  The competition was tough, and our team held up very well!  This was a very good start to the season.  We have something here for certain!!"

The Hawks have more cut out for them in week two. They travel to Triton on Tuesday then travel to Ohio of Friday for the two day Owens Invitational.
