Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Hawks Battle Tough Field at Owens Invitational

Perrysburg, OH: Harper Volleyball traveled to the Owens College Invitational, in Perrysburg, OH. The famous coach, Sonny Lewis has retired with 3 national championships, but still ran the tournament… for the last time.
Harper Volleyball won just one match and lost three matches. Of course, the losses were against very tough opponents. That's why Harper Volleyball travels to this tournament in Ohio.

On Friday August 29, Harper Volleyball lost to Southwestern Michigan 1-3 (25-20, 20-25, 23-25, 23-25); and defeated Oakland College 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 29-27).

On Saturday, Harper lost a very close "Instant Classic" match in 5 sets to St. Clair College, 2-3 (25-23, 9-25, 21-25, 25-15, and 14-16).  Harper Volleyball had a 13-9 lead in set 5, but lost 14-16. Fourteen of the 15 players on Harper's roster got into this instant classic.  Then Harper Volleyball lost to Edison State who won all 4 of their matches 1-3 (23-25, 25-22, 13-25, 22-25 ).

Performing well for Harper Volleyball during the Owens College Invitational…
  1. Libero Selin Hurdogan is continuing to pass serves well at 35% efficiency. Jocelyn Erling improved this weekend passing to 23%, while defensive specialist Brianna Van Dyke is passing 23% as well.  Non-starters Raegan Frappier and Oliwia Bardo both passed 27% and as a result will push for more court time.
  2. Naturally, at libero Hurdogan led Harper Volleyball with 57 digs (3.56 digs/set). She is the only player averaging more than 2.0 digs/set and is currently 2nd in the NJCAA with 195 digs.
  3. Erling led Harper Volleyball with 61 kills. This puts her at 143 total kills for the year, which is good enough for 2nd overall in the NJCAA DII leaderboard, for now. She also led Harper with a blistering 32.8% hitting percentage (Kills minus errors over total attacks). Mira Tchohadjieva is hitting 23.5% percent. Ali Pierre, in limited action turned in a very respectable 25% hitting percentage, and will also look for more court time.
  4. Serving continues to be a struggle as a team.  However, Hurdogan settled down this weekend and served 62-65 (95%) and had a team leading 8 aces; while Erling served 55 of 57 (96%) and 5 aces. Ana Kadolph also served 39 of 41 (95%) and an 1 ace. Phoebe Kim was also 53 of 56 (95%) and 2 aces.
  5. Kim amassed 146 assists this weekend for a 9.13 assists/set clip. For the year, she has accumulated 369 assists already, which is good enough for 2nd in the NJCAA at this point in the season.

There are about 180 teams competing in Division II volleyball.  Con
gratulations to Phoebe Kim, Selin Hurdogan and Jocelyn Erling for currently sitting high on the nationwide statistical leaderboards.

The Hawks play next against two Texas teams (Dallas College North Lake, Dallas College Eastfield) at the DuPage Invitational on Friday.
