WHITEWATER, Wis. - With only a few more weeks until the Midwest Districts, the #11 Harper College wrestling team continued to prepare to earn another trip to the national meet by participating in the Border Brawl at Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Hawks split two dual meets and also had a number of wrestlers compete in individual tournaments.
“It was a good weekend for us,” said head coach
Dan Loprieno. “We had a couple of dual meets, which is a nice setting for the kids to be in because there is some team stuff going on. But again, it's all about getting kids primed and ready to go.”
Harper dropped their first dual meet 30-21 to UW-Eau Claire.
Conor Infelise (McHenry, Ill., McHenry) won his match at 141 9-4 and
Curtis Blaydes took care of business in the heavyweight division, pinning Joe Pitsch.
Zach Hummel (Johnsburg, Ill., Johnsburg) and
Estanislao Arcos (Mundelein, Ill., Mundelein) also won by forfeit.
The Hawks rebounded later in the day to top Lakeland College 31-24. Hummel and Arcos both notched victories at 125 and 133, respectively. Infelise and Blaydes also continued their torrid stretch with wins at their respective weight classes. Infelise went 2-0 at 141 while also going 2-0 on the day at 133, his usual weight class.
Brandon Dillenbeck (Goshen, Ind., Goshen) went 4-0 on the day and
Michael Summerville (Lombard, Ill., Glenbard West) went 4-1. Loprieno was pleased with the way that each of them competed.
“The kids that wrestled are all doing well,” Loprieno said. “They were wrestling some pretty high-caliber kids and on a losing streak so it was nice to get them back in and into the 'W' column.”
This weekend, the Hawks have three dual meets, one each with #15 Muskegon Community College, #4 Lincoln College and #25 Triton College. The results will go a long way in determining the seeding for the Midwest Districts on Feb. 12.
“This will be a big weekend for us,” Loprieno said. “It will set a lot of seeds for the Region Tournament in 2 weeks. And that's the emphasis now. This weekend will be important. As long as they can continue to work hard, we'll be alright. It's a jigsaw puzzle and the pieces are starting to fall into place. We just have to hope that we finish the puzzle by February 12.”
