FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Harper College wrestling team posted a 3-2 record and placed sixth as a team at the NWCA National Duals over the weekend.
Harper College vs. Colby Community College
In the Hawks' opening match with No. 16 Colby CC, they pulled out a 34-15 victory by winning seven of 10 matches. Jacob Bellis (/Bloomington), Dusan Bogicevic (/Larkin), Kerin Ramirez (/Addison Trail) (by forfeit), Sean Dulom (/Sarasota), Greg Jacquez (/West Aurora), Lavontay Cobb (/King College Prep) (by forfeit), and Donte Winfield (/Perry Meridian ) all earned wins in their first matches. Bellis and Dulom each won by pinning their opponents, and Bogicevic had a convincing 10-0 decision over opponent Jairo Garcia. Jacquez and Winfield each squeaked out victories over their opponents with 6-5 and 1-0 decisions, respectively.
Harper College vs. Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College
Harper came into the weekend ranked No. 14 in the national poll. They nearly knocked off No. 4 Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, but the Golden Norseman came out on top with a 27-18 win.
At 125 pounds, Bellis won another match with a fall in 1:38 over Erik Juanes. Bogicevic won his second straight match at 133 pounds with a narrow 7-6 decision over Dillon McCaleb. Blake Tisza (/Thornton Fractional South) earned a 22-7 technical fall victory over Kristian Holguin-Mendez at 157 pounds. At 285 pounds, Winfield won 11-3 over opponent John Davison.
Harper College vs. Rochester Community & Technical College
The Hawks scored a win over RCTC by the score of 27-10. Bellis (by forfeit), Bogicevic, Ramirez, Tisza, Jacquez, Cobb and Kameran Hardwick (/Lake Park) all netted victories. Bogicevic's win was his third straight and came over Mason Moreno, 14-4. Tisza and Jacquez scored 19-6 and 18-5 victories over their opponents. In his first match of the weekend, Hardwick took down opponent Luis Pinto by the score of 13-6.
Harper College vs. Labette Community College
Harper scored a convincing 37-4 win over Labette. Bogicevic won his fourth straight match with an 11-0 triumph over James Carpenter. Matt Kitsis (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) wrestled at 157 pounds and earned a victory over Cody Foos. Jonathan Denikas (/Antioch) won a tight 4-3 match against the Cardinals' Derrick Gates.
Harper College vs. Iowa Lakes Community College
In the fifth place bout, Iowa Lakes won six matches and edged Harper 27-19. Dulom, Tisza, Jacquez, and Chance Shea (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) were the victors for the Hawks. Jacquez's was maybe the most impressive as he wrestled at 174 pounds, his third different weight class of the weekend. Dulom also won in 1:03 by fall over Iowa Lakes's Austin Schermer.
