ELMHURST, Ill. – The Harper College wrestling team had two first place finishers and scored 129.5 points to place second out of 11 teams at the 33rd Annual Al Hanke Wrestling Invitational at Elmhurst College on Saturday.
The Hawks finished runner-up to Olivet Nazarene University (141 points) and ahead of third place Elmhurst College (114.5 points).
Harper sophomore Blake Tisza (/Thornton Fractional South) blitzed the field at 157 pounds with a perfect 5-0 record. For his efforts, he was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the meet. Tisza earned his four victories by fall and his championship victory in an 8-6 decision over Elmhurst's Nick DiNardo.
Fellow sophomore Jacob Bellis (/Bloomington) posted a 4-0 record at 125 pounds for an individual title. In the title match, he bested Olivet's Mike Schmidt 8-4.
At 165 pounds, Greg Jacquez (/West Aurora) won three matches to reach the championship match against top-seeded Paul Papoutsis of the University of Chicago. Papoutsis edged Jacquez 7-5, so Jacquez settled for second place
The Hawks also got solid third place efforts from both Sean Dulom (/Sarasota) and Donte Winfield (/Perry Meridian ). Dulom, wrestling at 149 pounds, lost his first round match to former Harper standout Blake Santi (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) (Elmhurst College) but won four straight matches in the consolation bracket to take third. He won his third place match in convincing fashion with a 10-2 triumph over Trine University's Cody Konieczki.
Winfield won three matches to advance to the semifinals before losing to top-seeded Mack Green of Trine. He bounced back with a 2-1 win over Lincoln's Myron Hamilton.
Chance Shea (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) scored valuable points with a fourth place finish at 184 pounds. Dusan Bogicevic (/Larkin) took fifth place at 133 pounds, and Kerin Ramirez (/Addison Trail) was fifth at 141 pounds.
Harper will compete at the Lincoln Dual on Sunday, Jan. 25 at 1 PM.
