Ten Hawks Place at Dan Gable Open

OSHKOSH, Wis. – Ten Harper College wrestlers placed in their respective weight classes at the 13th Annual UW–Oshkosh Dan Gable Wrestling Open on Saturday. 

John Makey (/Grayslake) was the Hawks' first individual champion of the year, taking the honor at 165 pounds. Other high finishers included a second place showing for Duke Bogicevic (/Larkin) at 133 pounds, a second place finish for Ian Mullen (/McHenry West) at 125 pounds, a third place showing for Zach McCullough (/Elgin) at 125 pounds, and a third place finish for Cory Pych (/South Elgin) at 149 pounds.

Makey posted an impressive 4-0 record on his way to the individual title. In his first match of the day, he pinned Stephan Say of the University of the Cumberlands in 2:56. He then faced Mitchell Lambrecht of UW–Stevens Point, who was coming off a 19-0 victory in the first round. Makey won a tight 8-6 decision to advance to the semifinals.

In the semis, the freshman took on Biaz Dual of UW–Stevens Point and prevailed 6-0 to set up a finals showdown with Luke Moore of University of the Cumberlands. Makey defeated Moore by fall in 3:39.

Bogicevic went 3-1 on the day to take second place at 133 pounds. He started the morning off with a 5-1 victory over teammate Antoine Bess (/Fenton ), who took fourth place at 133. In his next match against Jake Sinkovics of University of the Cumberlands, Bogicevic was pinned in 1:59. However, the sophomore bounced back with an 8-2 victory over Bryce Fitzgerald of the Milwaukee School of Engineering and a 13-2 triumph over John Williams of University of the Cumberlands.

Mullen was impressive at 125 pounds. In his first three matches, he earned some narrow victories. First, he defeated Clay Lieber of UW–Stevens Point, 4-3, and followed it up with a 12-10 decision over Josh Olson of UW–Parkside. Mullen reached the finals with a 12-6 victory over James Spencer of Lakeland College. The championship match was against Airk Furseth of UW–Parkside, and Furseth pinned Mullen.

McCullough posted a 3-1 record at 125 pounds to finish third. After a first round bye, the sophomore defeated James Nolan of University of the Cumberlands, 7-1. He faced Airk Furseth in the semis but lost 9-6. McCullough bounced back with a 13-1 win over Josh Olson, and in the third place match he dominated James Nolan for a second time, 9-0.

Pych won four matches and lost just one at 149 pounds en route to a third place finish. The sophomore won by fall over UW –Oshkosh's Nathan Arquinego and then topped UW–Stevens Point's Dakota Kelz 8-5 to make it to the semifinals. Pych lost to Hunter Bell of University of the Cumberlands but bounced back with a 7-5 win over UW–Oshkosh's Craig Mason. Finally, he pinned Lakeland College's Cole Gonzalez to take third place.

Other notable performances from Harper wrestlers included a fifth place finish from Notay Jackson (/Mount Carmel ) at 157 pounds, fifth place for Tamchybai Turusbekov (/Northeast) at 174 pounds, fifth place for Logan Nesselrodt (/Bradley-Bourbonnais ) at 197 pounds, and sixth place for Stone Dax (/Grayslake North ) at 184 pounds.
