STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Harper College wrestling team opened its season on Saturday against some tough competition at the Pointer Open hosted by University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point. Hawks wrestlers Cory Pych (/South Elgin) and James Knapp (/Bradley-Bourbonnais) both had strong showing at 149 pounds. Pych placed fifth, and Knapp finished sixth.
Pych had a tough start to the day, losing 7-2 to Concordia-Moore's Ben Baumgartner. However, he bounced back with a victory by fall over Cole Gonzalez of Lakeland. Pych then went on to defeat Hunter Mulock of UW–Oshkosh, 4-2. He wrestled another great match, winning by pin in 1:52 over Cory Knudsen of UW–Oshkosh.
This set up a rematch with Baumgartner, with a spot in the third place match at stake. Baumgartner bested Pych in a close match, 5-2. Pych was awarded fifth place on a default forfeit from Knapp.
Knapp dominated his first match of the day, winning 12-1 over Alexi Bode of Concordia-Moore. He then squared off with Hunter Mulock of UW–Oshkosh and won 13-6. In a semifinal matchup against Ty Johnson of Concordia-Moore, Knapp put up a valiant fight but was finally pinned 5:31 into the match.
He then squared off with Concordia Moore's Rylee Anderson, a match he was forced to concede due to injury during the match. Knapp then had to forfeit to his teammate to finish sixth.
Freshman Ian Mullen (/McHenry West) posted an impressive 3-2 record at 125 pounds. Sophomore Duke Bogicevic (/Larkin) won his first two matches of the day and finished with a 2-2 record at 125 pounds. Fellow sophomore Zach McCullough (/Elgin) also won two matches at the Pointer Open at 125 pounds. Finally, freshman Howard Olson (/DeKalb) won two matches at 149 pounds.
The Harper College wrestling team will be back on the mats at the 13th Annual UW–Oskhosh Dan Gable Wrestling Open on Saturday, Nov. 14 at 9 AM.
