Five Hawks Place at Wisconsin Open

SOMERS, Wis. – The Harper College wrestling team had five wrestlers place in their respective weight classes at the 44th Annual Wisconsin Open hosted by the University of Wisconsin–Parkside.

John Makey (Grayslake, Ill. /Grayslake Central ) placed third at 157 pounds, and sophomore Zach McCullough (Elgin, Ill. /Elgin) placed fourth at 125 pounds. Ian Mullen (McHenry, Ill. /McHenry West) took fifth place at 125 pounds and Jimmy Knapp took fifth place at 141 pounds while Joe Oweina (/Fenton) took sixth place at 174 pounds.

Makey lost his first match of the day, 7-6, to Brandon Arteaga of UW–Whitewater but bounced back with a 9-5 win over Brandt Welcher of UW–Parkside. In the consolation semifinals, he pinned UW–Whitewater's Garrett Whitehead to qualify for the third place match. Makey won by fall over UW–Whitwater's Malik Smith to finish the day with a 3-1 record.

McCullough finished with a 3-2 record on the day. The sophomore won his first match handily, 11-2, over Triton College's James Gallardo and won by injury default in the next round over Logan Hanselmann of UW–Whitewater. He ran into a tough opponent in Ronzel Darling (UW–Parkside) in his semifinal match and lost 10-3, sending him to a consolation semifinal bout with Derek Heil of Lindenwood (Mo.). McCullough got the best of Heil with an 8-0 shutout. He narrowly lost, 10-8, to Maryville University's Jaret Singh in the third place match and had to settle for fourth place.

Mullen started his day by facing a very strong opponent in UW–Parkside's Airk Furseth (Unattached), a match he lost 11-4. He bounced back nicely with a convincing 18-3 victory over Cameron Baumgatner (Unattached) and won his next match by forfeit. Mullen then went on to win by technical fall, 18-3, over Maryville's Alex Waggoner. In the consolation semis, Singh defeated Mullen by fall at the 2:18 mark. Mullen was awarded fifth place due to injury default of his next opponent.

Knapp had a tough start to his day as he was pinned in 1:51 by UW–Whitewater's Corey Meyer. But he came back stronger than ever, reeling off three straight wins (by fall in just 46 seconds, 10-6 decision, and 20-5 technical fall). Knapp went toe-to-toe with Austin Nash (Purdue University, Unattached) in the consolation semifinals but lost 5-4. The freshman racked up the points in his fifth place match, winning 16-8 over Tyler Janes of Maryville.

Like many of his teammates, Oweina had a tough first match but didn't let it define him. The freshman lost to Lincoln College's Jimique Davis in the first round but won his next two matches. The first win was a 3-1 decision over Triton's Shawn Swiderek, and he pinned North Central's Keshawn Hawkins at the 1:20 mark. Oweina was pinned in his next two matches but still managed to take sixth place.

The Hawks wrestle next at the Art Kraft Memorial Open hosted by Triton College on Saturday, Dec. 12.
