FORT WAYNE, IN. – The Harper College wrestling team won two of its dual matches at the 2016 NWCA National Duals on Friday and Saturday and claimed eighth place at the meet.
Harper College vs. No. 13 Colby Community College
In its opening match of the weekend, the Hawks won six of their 10 matches to propel them to a 29-19 win over No. 13 Colby Community College. Ian Mullen (McHenry, Ill. /McHenry West) defeated his opponent by pin in 41 seconds at 133 pounds, and Jimmy Knapp won by fall in 1:38 over Austin Swartz at 141 pounds. Stone Dax (Lake Villa, Ill. /Grayslake North ) was the other Harper wrestler to win by fall, defeating Collin Mahanay in the latter stages of their match at the 6:08 mark.
Howard Olson (DeKalb, Ill. /DeKalb) won his match decisively, 19-4, at 157 pounds, and Tamchybai Turusbekov (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan/Northeast) won 10-5 over Johnathon Hernandez at 174 pounds. Finally, sophomore Cory Pych (/South Elgin) earned a narrow 3-2 decision over John Peeden.
Harper College vs. No. 4 Iowa Central Community College
Harper faced off against the fourth-ranked team in the country in Iowa Central CC on Friday afternoon. The Tritons were too much for the Hawks, winning 42-6. Despite the lopsided square, several Hawks wrestled well. Kameran Hardwick (/Lake Park) was the only Hawk to win his match as he pinned Quelton Toliver at the 5:00 mark.
Mullen nearly knocked off top-ranked Alex De La Cruz at 125 pounds before De La Cruz prevailed, 17-12.
Harper College vs. Neosho County Community College
In their final dual match of the day on Friday, the Hawks won seven of 10 matches and were victorious, 38-13, over Neosho County Community College. Mullen, Pych, Olson, and Hardwick each pinned their opponents. Zach McCullough (Elgin, Ill. /Elgin) earned a win by forfeit, and James Knapp (Bourbonnais, Ill. /Bradley-Bourbonnais) dominated his opponent with a 16-0 win. Finally, Logan Nesselrodt (Bourbonnais, Ill. /Bradley-Bourbonnais ) eked out an 11-10 win over Josh Walker at 197 pounds.
Harper College vs. No. 12 Western Wyoming Community College
On Saturday, Harper took on Western Wyoming CC. The Mustangs won six of the 10 matches and defeated the Hawks in a close one, 25-18.
Knapp, Pych, and Hardwick all won their respective matches. Knapp won by pin in 1:40, and Pych and Hardwick won comfortable decisions (8-1 and 11-4). Finally, Eddie Washington received a win by forfeit.
Harper College vs. No. 5 Iowa Western Community College
In their fifth and final match of the weekend, the Hawks took on fifth-ranked Iowa Western CC. The Reivers won eight of 10 matches and won 40-9 over Harper.
The two Hawks wins came from Pych, who defeated Oscar Ramirez of Iowa Western CC 3-1, and Mullen, who won by forfeit.
