PALATINE, Ill. – The Harper College wrestling program hosted its annual Harper Open on Saturday in the Wellness & Sports Center. Nine teams participated in the all-day meet. The host Hawks had 13 competitors, and several had very strong showings.
Zach McCullough (Elgin, Ill. /Elgin) and John Makey (Grayslake, Ill. /Grayslake Central ) both placed runner-up in their respective divisions, and Antoine Bess (Chicago, Ill. /Fenton ) and James Knapp (Bourbonnais, Ill. /Bradley-Bourbonnais) took third place in their weight classes.
McCullough posted a 2-1 mark at 133 pounds. He started his day with a convincing 22-6 win over Lincoln College's Kaevahn Pendelton. McCullough then bested Triton College's Daniel Emma, 7-2, to reach the first place match against Lincoln's Ricky Stringfellow. Unfortunately, the sophomore lost the match by injury default and settled for second. McCullough's teammate Antoine Bess (Chicago, Ill. /Fenton ) took third place at 133.
Makey wrestled in a seven-man field at 165 pounds and won two of his three matches. He won handedly, 14-5, over Triton's Ean Eichert in the first round. Makey had a tougher match with Lincoln's Tyree Overton in the semifinals but prevailed 6-3 to set up a finals showdown with Davon Jackson of Muskegon Community College. Jackson pinned Makey at the 1:59 mark.
Knapp took third place in a 13-man bracket at 141, winning four matches in the process. The freshman defeated Triton's Logan Mathey 17-2, Lincoln's Jaime Valdez 7-0, Jared Braun (unattached) 11-10, and Anfernee Rodgers (unattached) by injury default. His lone loss of the day was to North Central College's Justin McGady, 8-2, in the semifinals.
Other notable Hawks: Ian Mullen (McHenry, Ill. /McHenry West) placed fourth at 125 pounds … Paul Marcson (Buffalo Grove, Ill. /Stevenson ) took fifth at 125 pounds … Tamchybai Turusbekov (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan/Northeast) was fifth at 174 … Cody Barnes (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock ) earned fifth at 197 … Howard Olson (DeKalb, Ill. /DeKalb) was sixth at 157.
