Cross Country Runs Strong as only JC

9/23/2023 - CUBA CITY, WI: The cross country teams traveled to Cole Acres Golf Course on Saturday for the Pioneer Gender Equity Invite hosted by UW-Platteville. This is a unique race in which the men and women are racing together, with the men starting at 11:00 AM and the women starting less than three minutes later.The women raced 6k this week while the men continued to race 8k. The women finished sixth and men finished seventh in a race with no other junior colleges.

Women
Five women ran for the Hawks. Lilly Alberts led them as she won the race, again! This is the third race in a row Alberts has won. She set a personal record in the 6k running 23:12, improving upon last race when she ran 23:17.

Claudia Wojciechowski was the second runner coming in 30th finishing with a time of 25:52. Kasey Ledinsky was third for the Hawks, closing strong coming in 60th running 27:30. Kaili Decker wasn't far behind coming in 62nd running 27:43. Rounding out scoring for the Hawks was Isabella Wojciechowski coming in 71st and running 28:36.

Men
12 men ran for the Hawks with Albert Szewczyk leading the way, coming in 24th. He broke 27:00 for 8k for the second time this season running 26:57.

Marcos Jaimes and Konrad Jakubowski raced together through a lot of the race. In the last mile, Jaimes pulled away finishing in 43rd while Jakubowski finished in 49th. They ran 27:33 and 27:43. They are both looking strong and have been working well together.

Owen Whelan finished 74th running 28:36. He forgot his spikes at home, borrowed a teammate's that didn't fit, and ultimately took them off mid-race and threw them to Coach Majerus. Freshmen move without question, but a learning experience and not a bad result having to run in socks. Jose Morales was close behind him finishing in 77th running 28:42. Morales has been dealing with some ankle/achilles pain and will look to take things a little easier to recover going forward.

Matt Trybus and Eric Martinez finished together. While Martinez tried to edge out Trybus, Trybus left his heart on the course and made sure to hold him off. Trybus finished 94th running 29:27.8 with Martinez right behind him running 29:28.7. When I say Trybus left his heart on the course, I mean he pulled a muscle in his chest in the process.

Harry Carr, Carter Swearingen, Jose Guzman, Edwin Amaro, and Christopher Gama also raced for the men.

The Hawks race next on Friday, September 29th, at the Heartland Invite, hosted by Heartland Community College, in Normal, IL.
