Continuous Improvement at Chicagoland Championships

Elmhurst/Wheaton, IL: The Hawks competed in another two day meet at the Chicagoland Championships Friday and Saturday following the NCC First Chance Invitational. On the first day of the meet, all throwing events were hosted at Lawson Field (Wheaton) while a distance carnival was held at Elmhurst.

Friday
To start the day the Hawks' throwing crew traveled to Wheaton College.

The first throwing event for the men was the hammer throw. Iliia Niku was the lone thrower for the Hawks reaching 98' 4". He also shot putted and threw javelin simultaneously before throwing the discus. Juggling the two throwing events proved to be difficult as he couldn't change into javelin spikes. He shot putted 32' 8.5" and thew the javelin 110' 6". In the discus, he threw 117' 9".

Two other men joined Niku in the javelin. Kamil Drozd threw 139' 4" and Luke Bahn threw a personal record 130' 3".

Late into the night two men raced the 10k for the first time in their careers. Jose Morales ran 33:48.56 and Konrad Jakubowski ran 34:10.40. Morales made the Hawks' Outdoor Top 10 list and is ranked 9th. Both are ranked in the top 10 nationally sitting at 2nd and 4th.

Saturday
The first track events on Saturday were the 110m hurdle prelims followed by the 100m dash prelims. Long jump took place simultaneously with the prelims while pole vault started shortly after.

Two men raced in the 110m hurdles. Bahn ran 17.05 and Diego Farias ran 18.34. Bahn is currently ranked 7th in the nation. In the dash prelim, one Hawk advanced to finals as Omarion Jones ran a personal record 10.99. He ran 11.03 in the finals. Alek Ledezma ran a personal record 11.25, Gianluca Manuel ran a season best of 11.51, Lucas McMillan ran a season best of 11.91, and Devin Patel and Tyler Anderson both ran 12.24.

Two men also competed in long jump with Jones having a season best 20' 7" jump while Connor Mobeck jumped 19' .5".

The Hawks had two 400m relay teams this week as they try out more options. The 'A' team consisted of Mobeck, Patel, Jones, and Ledezma while the 'B' team was McMillan, Manuel, Drozd, and Anderson. They ran 43.88 and 45.17. The Hawks' time from last week has them ranked 5th in the nation.

Next on the track as the 1500m featuring Jason Schmidt, Eric Martinez, and Christopher Gama. Schmidt ran 4:22.08, Martinez 4:23.61, and Gama 5:13.52. Schmidt is currently ranked 13th nationally based on his indoor mile conversion.

The 400m crew was consistent per usual led by Mobeck in 51.60. Fortis Variano had a personal record 51.74 and Drozd ran 52.69. They're ranked 8th, 12th, and 15th nationally.

Five men raced the 800m with two meeting the national qualifying standards. Dakota White led the team with a 2:02.54. Owen Whelan and Marcos Jaimes joined him in making the qualifying standard with times of 2:03.19 and 2:03.26. They're ranked 7th, 11th, and 12th nationally. Harry Carr ran a 2:08.94 and Edwin Amaro ran a personal record 2:16.70.

In the 400m hurdles Bahn improved his personal record from last week running 60.47 while Maksym Perchyts ran 68.15. Bahn is ranked 8th in the nation.

Only two men raced in the 200m with Jones running 23.07 and Manuel running 25.10.

To cap things off the Hawks had two 1600m relay teams with the 'A' team setting a season best. They ran 3:27.73 with an order of Mobeck, Variano, Drozd, and White. They are currently ranked 3rd behind DuPage and Joliet. The 'B' team ran 3:35.79 with an order of McMillan, Jaimes, Carr, and Whelan.

The Hawks next meet will be on Saturday at Olivet-Nazarene.
