The Harper College women's basketball team lost to an undefeated Malcom X squad 89-21 squad on Tuesday night in Palatine.
After not scoring for the first four minutes of the game, the Hawks got on the board when
Mitshi Ishioka (Carlsbad, Calif., Carlsbad) sent a lead pass to
Sarah Eschenbaum (Lake Zurich, Ill., Lake Zurich) with 15:40 left to make it 8-2 in Malcom X's favor. Malcom X proceeded to run off 17 straight points before Ishioka scored on a driving one-hander with 9:17 left.
Brittany Walls (Island Lake, Ill., Palatine) got into the action shortly after, scoring on a short jump shot off a nice feed from Eschenbaum.
But Malcom X (6-0) went on another run, outscoring the Hawks 12-0 over the next five and a half minutes. Ishioka's cross court pass set up a wide open jumper for Eschenbaum to finally stop the run.
Harper (0-5) went cold on the offensive end to start the second half, failing to score for more than seven minutes. By the time Ishioka made a runner and converted the ensuing free throw with 12:32 left, Malcom X led 69-11. The point guard scored again on the next possession before taking a charge on the defensive end.
The Hawks went on a 6-0 run late in the game highlighted by a jump shot from
Alyssa Arwady (Rolling Meadows, Ill., Rolling Meadows).
Ishioka paced Harper with 11 points after going 4-4 from the free throw line in the final two minutes while Eschenbaum added eight. Ariana Novak scored a game-high 18 points for Malcom X while Candise Lundy chipped in with 15 points.
Harper gets a day off on Wednesday before taking on McHenry County College (0-7) in Crystal Lake on Thursday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:15 PM.
