Group Effort Leads Hawks to Victory

PALATINE, Ill. – The Harper College women's volleyball team got back to their winning ways on Wednesday night, sweeping Triton College (25-9, 25-5, 25-15).  The Hawks ended their two-match losing streak by using a variety of players.

After the Trojans evened the score in the first game at 1-1, the Hawks rattled off 7 straight points to take a commanding 8-1 lead.  Sierra Gilmore (Fayetteville, NC, Cape Fear) started the run with a kill and a Lauren LaMasse (Hoffman Estates, Ill., Hoffman Estates) kill ended it.  Harper (21-7, 5-2 N4C) held leads of 15-4 and 18-5 before finishing off the Trojans.  Harper scored the first 4 points of the second game courtesy of three aces from Bolawa Gbadebo (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Thornwood/Hoffman Estates) (Hoffman Estates, Ill., Thornwood/Hoffman Estates). After Triton got on the board, the Hawks reeled off 8 straight points to go up 12-1.  In the third game, the Trojans stayed close at 3-3 but Harper scored the next 6 points to take control.

“It was a fun night for us because everyone got to play,” said head coach Bob Vilsoet.  “It was a good opportunity for everyone to get in there.”

Gilmore led the Hawks on attack with eight kills while added seven, Stephanie Igielski (Streamwood, Ill., St. Edwards) had 5 and Marni Gonnering (Schaumburg, Ill., Schaumburg) had 4.  Gilmore also picked up 4 blocks and Kelly Sommers (Arlington Heights, Ill., Buffalo Grove) had a double-double with 14 assists and ten digs.

Harper returns to action on Tuesday with another home contest as Rock Valley comes to town.  Rock Valley, who is currently ranked seventh in the NJCAA poll, defeated Harper 3-1 on September 6th.  First serve is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
