MADISON, Wisc. – Still searching for their first conference win, the Harper College men's basketball team lost another heartbreaker, this time falling to Madison College 73-72.
Harper (6-16, 0-6 N4C) has fallen on hard times of late as their last three games have all been decided by five points or less, two of which were one point defeats.
“I keep telling our guys that I feel like if we win one, we may win ten in a row,” said head coach Anthony Amarino. “That's just kind of the way that it's been going.”
The Hawks led almost the entire first half and took a 37-32 lead into halftime as they hit on 52% of their shots, including 5 of 13 from three-point range.
But Tyler Kowalkowski of Madison (5-12, 3-3) scored 19 of his game-high 30 points after halftime as the WolfPack fought off an 11-point second half deficit. Harper led for the final 12:03 of the game until Madison's Garrett Borgurd hit a shot with just six seconds left to put his team ahead to stay after Harper missed the front end of a one-and-one with ten seconds left.
John Lorenz (Elk Grove Village, Ill., Elk Grove) stepped up on offense for Harper, scoring a team-high 19 points while also hauling in seven rebounds. Amarino was pleased with the way Lorenz and the rest of the squad battled.
“John played his best all-around game for us,” Amarino said. “Most of our guys played pretty well. We just missed a free throw at the wrong time.”
The Hawks got balanced scoring as three other players hit for double figures.
Shonnon Barfield (Posen, Ill., Homewood-Flossmoor) had 16,
Simeon Handy (Chicago, Ill., Farragut Academy) provided a boost off the bench with 11 while
Jordan Mack (Hillside, Ill., St. Joseph) had ten points and eight rebounds.
The Hawks return to action on Wednesday for the start of a three-game home stand as College of DuPage comes to town. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
