Hawks Take Sixth at Highland

FREEPORT, Ill. – The Harper College men's basketball team won one of their three games over the weekend and finished in sixth place at the William R. Bear Classic Tournament.
 
Harper (6-8) dropped their opener 60-52 to the hosts, Highland Community College (6-2).  After trailing 34-22 at halftime, Harper outscored Highland 30-26 in the second half, but it wasn't enough.  The Hawks knocked down 11 3-pointers but shot 30.2% (19-of-63) from the floor. Connor Miklasz (Mount Prospect, Ill., Hersey) led Harper with 14 points and four assists, hitting on 4-of-9 from long range.  Michael Rose (Rolling Meadows, Ill., Rolling Meadows) added ten points and seven rebounds while Garett Gatz (Elk Grove Village, Ill., Conant) had eight points and six rebounds.  The Cougars, who went on to win the championship, were led by Brandon Ward's 17 points.
 
In the consolation bracket, the Hawks ran into a familiar foe in N4C rival College of DuPage.  After getting out to a 37-19 lead at the break, Harper held on for a 70-62 victory.  Tyler Gaedele (Arlington Heights, Ill., Rolling Meadows ) led five players in double-figures with 16 points, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range.  Gatz chipped in 13 points while Miklasz had 12 and Rose and Charles Wright (Cheyenne, Wyo., Cheyenne East) each scored 11.  Brandon Kase (Schaumburg, Ill., Schaumburg) had six rebounds and Miklasz dished out five assists.
 
With the win, Harper advanced to the fifth place game but dropped a 78-63 decision to Lake Land College (8-3).  Gaedele paced the scoring attack with 13 points and three assists.  John Lorenz (Elk Grove, Ill., Elk Grove) came off the bench to score 12 while Miklasz had seven points and five assists.  Rose and Kase each missed double-doubles.  Rose had 11 points and nine rebounds while Kase had nine points and ten rebounds.
 
This concludes the team's schedule in 2012.  The team will return to the court on Jan. 3 when they host on Richard J. Daley College.  Tipoff is slated for 7:00 PM.
