Box Score
ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Harper College women's basketball team scored the first basket of the game against the defending national champions on a Monica Hinderer (Arlington Heights, Ill., The Willows Academy) jump shot, but that was the only lead the Hawks would have in a 100-44 loss to #2 Rock Valley College.
Rachel Payne (Wheeling, Ill., Schaumburg Christian Academy) scored a game-high 21 points to lead Harper (5-6, 0-2 N4C), but the team shot only 29.4% from the floor, and that wasn't enough to keep up with Rock Valley (16-2, 2-0), who shot 48.7%. Hinderer added 12 points and ten rebounds, but the Hawks were outboarded 43-34. Payne also hauled in eight rebounds.
Harper stayed close early on as baskets from Rachel Payne (Wheeling, Ill./Schaumburg Christian Academy) and Jayna Rowland (Arlington Heights, Ill./Christian Liberty Academy) had the Hawks down just 11-6 just under four minutes into the game. Payne, who scored 12 points in the first half, knocked down a jump shot to narrow the deficit to 23-14 with 8:39 left in the opening half, but that was as close as the team would get the rest of the game.
The Eagles closed the half on a 28-10 run to lead 51-24 at the break. And a 20-2 run to open the second half put the Hawks in an even bigger hole.
Autumn Korotasz led Rock Valley with 17 points while Shantiera Miller added 16.
Up next, the Hawks host Wilbur Wright College (1-14, 0-2) on Wednesday in search for their first conference victory. Tipoff is slated for 5:00 PM.
