RIVER GROVE, Ill. – Led by four second place finishes, the Harper College wrestling team placed fourth out of eight teams at the Midwest Districts meet, hosted by Triton College on Sunday.
Zach Hummel (Johnsburg, Ill., Johnsburg),
Josh Tardy (Naperville, Ill., Naperville Central),
Steven Dewitt (Sterling, Ill., Sterling) and
Kalvin Argueta (Barrington, Ill., Barrington) each took second in their respective weight classes while
Blake Santi (Roselle, Ill., Lake Park) was third.
Michael Summerville (Lombard, Ill., Glenbard West) and
Larry Carter (Indianapolis, Ind.) each placed fourth. All seven qualified for the national meet on Feb. 22-23 at at the Richard O. Jacobson Exhibition Center at the Fairground in Des Moines, Iowa.
Harper earned 99.5 points to finish just behind third-place Rend Lake College, who scored 109.5 points. Lincoln College won the meet with 139.5 points while Muskegon Community College had 127 points.
Hummel won his first two matches at 133 pounds to reach the final before falling to Rend Lake's Darrell Pampkin 6-3. Tardy also won first and second round matches at 149 pounds before getting pinned by Lincoln's Takil Agnew in the finals. Dewitt won his first two matches before losing to Rend Lake's Justin Cash 5-4 in the 157-pound championship while Argueta needed just one win to reach the 174-pound final, where he lost to Riley Boomer of Muskegon.
Santi (141 pounds), Summerville (184 pounds) and Carter (heavyweight) all will be aiming to place in the top eight at nationals to earn All-American honors.
The team will depart on Feb. 20.
