Box Score JOLIET, Ill. – The fourth-ranked Harper volleyball team earned a sweep over Joliet Junior College on Tuesday evening (25-16, 25-13, 25-15).
The Hawks (19-7, 5-2 N4C) battled back from a 7-1 deficit in the first game to take a commanding 18-11 lead on the way to victory. Outside hitters Alyssia Dugo (Algonquin, Ill. /Jacobs) and Shannon Igielski (Streamwood, Ill/St. Edward) each put down four kills, and Lindsey Murphy (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Crystal Lake South) recorded seven assists and was 7-of-8 serving with an ace. Libero Meghan Chartier (Inverness, Ill./Buffalo Grove) played strong defense with seven digs.
The second game was tied at 9-9 before the Hawks reeled off 12 of the next 16 points to grab a 21-13 lead. Harper finished off Joliet (8-14, 3-5 N4C) with four straight points. Middle hitter Sarah Berggren (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) smashed three kills in the set, and Chartier was a strong in the service game as she went 8-of-8 with three aces.
In the third game, the Hawks once again distanced themselves from the Wolves as the game went on. Trailing 11-8, Harper reeled off eight straight points and pulled away for the match victory. Igielski tallied five more kills while Daniele Sortino (Elk Grove Village, Ill. /Elk Grove) added three kills. Murphy collected another eight assists for a team-high 21 assists, and Chartier added six more digs for a match-high 18 digs and was 19-of-19 serving.
"We played like a symphony tonight, where everybody played their part. It was nice to play well in this gym tonight – this is where the regional playoffs will take place," said Harper head coach Bob Vilsoet.
The Hawks return to their home court Thursday evening for a 5:45 PM match with Oakton Community College (12-8).
