Harper Tops McHenry in 4

CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. – After an opening set loss, the Harper College volleyball team won three straight sets to earn a victory, their 30th of the season, over host McHenry County College on Thursday evening (20-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-20).

"We played sets 2, 3 and 4 like a masterpiece I always wanted to see. I was very proud of our effort and execution today," said Harper head coach Bob Vilsoet.

In the first set, the Hawks (30-13) trailed in the middle of the match before Jillian Hoffman (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey)'s serves tied it up at 19-19. The Scots (16-20) scored six of the final seven points to win the game. Lauren Sokolowski (Rolling Meadows, Ill./Rolling Meadows) led Harper with four kills, Lindsey Murphy (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Crystal Lake South) had five assists and five digs, and Alyssia Dugo (Algonquin, Ill. /Jacobs) led the team with seven digs.

Harper started out strong with an 8-0 lead in the second set behind Murphy's serves and had control throughout on the way to victory. Dugo added three more kills and four digs while Daniele Sortino (Elk Grove Village, Ill. /Elk Grove) tallied two kills and two blocks.

The Hawks held a 9-7 lead in the third set before extending it to 17-8 and 21-13 on the way to winning 25-18. Dugo and Shannon Igielski (Streamwood, Ill/St. Edward) smashed three kills apiece, and Hoffman dished out five assists.

Harper controlled the fourth set, starting with leads of 5-2 and 13-6. They held leads of 17-10 and 22-13 before winning 25-20. Sortino had three kills, and libero Meghan Chartier (Inverness, Ill./Buffalo Grove) had eight digs for a match-high 19 digs. Sarah Bregenzer (Wauconda, Ill./Mundelein) was 6-of-6 serving with two aces in the set.

Murphy notched a double-double with 15 digs and 17 assists, and Dugo just missed with nine kills and 17 digs.

"McHenry is a good team, and we played at a high level of energy with smooth transitions from defense to offense, covering and back. We all played our parts. This was a good match for us tonight," Vilsoet said.

The win marked the Hawks' fourth straight 30-win season and seventh in the last 13 years.

The Hawks will play Kankakee Community College and Elgin Community College to close out the regular season at the Kankakee Tri-Match on Saturday beginning at 10 AM.
